Ampsandsound Kenzie OG Rev 2 ($2500)
Generation 2 of the Kenzie OG..
The close of 2021 has brought out more than 18 months of a global pandemic. During these challenging times, we at ampsandsound strengthened our development efforts resulting in new generation of our classic amps.
Though octal input tubes provide a romantic character that had defined the ampsandound house sound, reminiscent of 1950s HiFi, the downside to this approach is a reduced noise floor and dwindling NOS options. With ampsandound moving to a 9pin front end, performance has been increased, NOS tube rolling has become nearly limitless, and yet we were able to enhance the sweetness and tone we are known for. The 9pin front end allows vastly increased options for tone rolling to find your balance and preference.
With our front end's new development, we have improved our amps further, including both subtle and significant changes alike. Notable takeaways include increased power output, reduced noise floor across all our amps, increased bandwidth.
Kenzie..
Like many of our products, the Kenzie headphone amplifier evolved from our earlier designs – in this case, rave reviews about the SE-84’s headphone section. The inevitable question followed; why didn’t we build a dedicated headphone amp?
Why indeed? After some research, we came to the conclusion that a headphone amplifier building on the much loved Darling circuit was the right choice for us. The outstanding performance of the Kenzie headphone amplifier is made possible with custom wound ultra-high quality output transformers providing amazing frequency extension.
The Kenzie does not use a voltage network, and has more than enough power to drive even the most difficult headphones. We chose 32 ohms and 600-ohm output taps to allow use with the widest variety of headphones; everything from Grado Labs, HiFiMan, Audeze, MrSpeakers, Sennheiser, and Beyerdynamic.
The Kenzie showcases the transformers on the chassis to frame in the unique 1626 single-ended tubes. We have included an ALPS volume pot to allow attenuation and simplify the signal path.
The Kenzie is one of the sweetest-sounding headphone amplifiers on the market. The 1626 is commonly referred to as the “Poor Man’s 300B”; offering a similar level of warmth, texture, and soundstage depth.
The 1626 is a WWII-era tube that was used as a transmitter tube in radar installations. The design is shy on pure output, but offers layers of texture and drive, and is paired with a massive choke and robust output transformers for ultra-quiet operation. As with all of our products, parts selection was crucial during this build and each chosen not for price, but for best quality and synergy.

Ampsandsound Mogwai SE Rev 2 ($3600)
Generation 2 of the Mogwai SE..
Mogwai..
Like many of our products, the Mogwai evolved from our earlier designs, borrowing from the Bigger Ben and Classic Wonder, while embracing the form factor of the Kenzie. The Mogwai offers more than an entry point for tube amps, but a hybrid product, meant for both headphone and loudspeaker use.
Our circuit offers the ability to roll a wide variety of tubes inexpensively and bring increased power to headphones without any sacrifice of design choices that conflict with our values.
The Mogwai combines the features of a full-sized two-channel power amplifier and headphone amplifier in a chassis that is suitable for desktop use.
The Mogwai utilizes single-ended Class A operation with zero feedback to provide the essence of our Classic Wonder sound; strictly old school SET sound, without having to spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on tubes.
The performance of the Mogwai is made possible with custom wound ultra-high quality output transformers from Transcendar, which provide excellent frequency extension and a flat response.
The Mogwai does not use a voltage divider network but depends on transformers instead. We chose a 32 ohm tap for headphones to offer a dedicated selection for the widest range of headphones, and an 8-ohm loudspeaker tap to connect the Mogwai to moderately efficient loudspeakers.
The Mogwai displays its transformers prominently on the chassis to frame in the tube complement, which can vary from a 6L6GC to a KT88.
Volume control is handled by the ALPS volume pot to allow attenuation and simplify the signal path. Zero feedback on the outputs negates the need for a pre-amplifier; an iPhone can drive the Mogwai without issue.
The Mogwai differs from the Kenzie as it aims to provide powerful output while remaining true to classic tube design. As with all ampsandsound products, we strive for a neutral, non-fatiguing sound, and demand that all our products be ultra-quiet in operation. Quiet operation is not just a goal but a guiding principle that shapes all design and implementation choices.
Tube Selection:
Input tube: 5751 or 12AX7
Output tubes: 6L6GC, EL34s, KT66, KT77, KT88, 6550s and KT90s

Ampsandsound Kenzie Ovation Rev 2 ($4200)
Generation 2 of the Kenzie Ovation..
Kenzie Ovation..
Like many of our products, the Kenzie Ovation headphone amplifier/power amplifier evolved from our earlier designs - in this case... it came from the the lessons and experiences learned form the Suolo Monos and the Bigger Ben. In both of those previous products we saw how much big iron mattered, and we wondered what would happen if we took the lessons learned from the Bigger Ben and applied them to the Kenzie. From this the Kenzie Ovation was born.
To improve on the Kenzie Encore and the Suolo Monos we needed to go bigger with everything. The PS capacitance was increased, the choke doubled its filtering and our Output transformers doubled in size from the ones used on the Suolo Monos.
The 20 watt output transformers may look like the ones used on the Bigger Ben, however they are specially designed to take advantage of the lower output of Kenzie. The larger core of these transformers led to the ability to support 5 different impedance: 8, 16 which are great for high efficiency planers. 32 which is perfect for low impedance orthodynamics. The 100ohm is selected to pair well with the Audeze headphones and the 300ohm provides high impedance match for ZMF andSennheiser.
The input of Kenzie Ovation unitizes input transformers for reduced noise floor, greater clarity and sub bass response. For this reference amplifier we paired the finniest coupling caps, Jupiter copper foil in wax caps. The increases in micro detail retrieval were remarkable.
Like many of our products, the Kenzie Ovation is a hybrid product, meant for both headphone and loudspeaker use.
The Ovation, like the Encore and OG Kenzie is one of the sweetest-sounding headphone amplifiers on the market. The 1626 is commonly referred to as the“Poor Man’s 300B”. The Ovation expands on this by bringing the same tonal balance and sonic signature to high efficiency speakers thanks to its 8 ohm speaker output.
The heart of the Ovation is the 1626 triode which is a WWII-era transmitter tube in radar installations. The design is shy on pure output, but offers layers of texture and drive. Like all good tube amplifiers, the Kenzie Ovation ships with a full set of NOS tubes.
The Kenzie Ovation differs from the Bigger Ben as it aims to provide romantic full sound, with a focus on low noise operation. While all of our amps are quiet, the Ovation is the quietest amp we have ever produced.
Both the Ovation and Bigger Ben are reference headphone amplifiers, choosing between the two comes down the types of headphones you use. If you need raw power the Bigger Ben is the right amp for you, if you primarily use Othodynamics or high efficiency planar magnetic headphones (HE1000SE as an example) the Kenzie Ovation will leave you speechless with its detailed and and romantic presentation.
When we heard it for the first time, we thought it deserved a standing ovation, hence its name.

Ampsandsound Bigger Ben Rev 2 ($5600)
Generation 2 of the Bigger Ben..
With our front end's new development, we have improved our amps further, including both subtle and significant changes alike. Notable takeaways include increased power output, reduced noise floor across all our amps, increased bandwidth.
Bigger Ben..
The Bigger Ben started life as 2nd channel adaptation of the Mogwai. It employed huge transformers and was a Class A beast. With the development of the Mogwai SE, the Bigger Ben became redundant as the Mogwai SE is such an overachiever. With the development of the Suolo and Pendant monos, we had worked to push the boundaries of what we were currently offering. The Mogwai SE Rev 2 became the 1st to benefit from the trickle-down development process. The work led to further transformer improvements. We proved that larger transformers yielded increased resolution, clarity, and flatter frequency response.
With a request of a long-time customer who wanted a power amp for his headphone and wanted the widest bandwidth we could produce; we set about resurrecting the Bigger Ben.
To improve the Mogwai SE we needed to go bigger with everything. The PS capacitance was increased, the choke nearly doubled its filtering and our output transformers doubled in size. The larger core of the output transformers led to the ability to out even a great variety of output impedances.
Providing 8ohm, 16ohm seemed ideal for the planers, the 32ohm is great for many low impedance orthodynamics. The 100ohm is selected to pair well with Audeze headphones and the 300ohm provides the high impedance match for ZMF and Sennheiser.

Ampsandsound Rockwell ($5800)
The ampsandsound Rockwell brings the legendary Direct Heated Triode sound to personal audio. We chose the 6B4G as it stand tall next to other top shelf triodes while still being accessible in NOS form. Combining a single gain stage, zero feedback, and careful attention to grounding techniques, we can use a the Large 6B4G Triode with headphones without hum or noise.
The Rockwell tube amp pairs a 6SL7 tube for the front end with tube rectification enabling excellent transient peeks, faster/livelier presentation, and ultra-quite operation. The Rockwell uses direct-heated triodes with zero feedback providing the classic single-ended sound so widely loved.
Typical of all ampsandsound amplifiers, the power supply is massive. This, combined with a generous choke, yields our trademark low noise; less than 1.5mV at the idle, and stable output of 3 watts RMS into an 8ohm load and 2 watts into a 32ohm headphone. Frequency response is 12hz to 30hz at 1 watt, 1-dB. Carefully selected output iron reduces distortion and increases frequency response. And of course, we also use our 5% capacitors and 2% resistors.
The motivation of the Rockwell is to provide access to the wide availability of NOS tubes and give the warm mid-range bloom that is at the heart of single-ended direct-heated triode designs. Tube set included.

Ampsandsound Nautilus ($9200)
The Nautilus is our flagship Personal Audio Tubed Integrated Amplifier.
The Story of the Nautilus is born of the same process that brought the Zions. We set out to build my private amps apart from ampsandsound. These were to be mine without branding and never to leave for demos. All too often, my own listening space was sacrificed for the need for demo stock. I choice the HK Cit II as my inspiration point. From that seed came my own Cit II Monos build on turrets just like the best amps of the golden age. Ampsandsound followed with the Sulo monos. The Sulo and Leeloo monos brought turret-based construction and our highest performance to personal audio, but the dual mono layout is not for everyone.
The Nautilus brings the dual-mono layout onto a single chassis. We start with our most versatile circuit, the Mogwai, and go about creating two separate amps that share a single chassis. 2 Power Transformers, Separate Power Supplies, Chokes, and input transformers. The amps are built with separate turret boards, with the one shared component being the input tube, volume control, and outputs. We were unconstrainted with parts selection and layout and chose the most robust power transformer and widest/least distortion output transformers we could find.
The Nautilus’ hand build nature and part selection necessitated a robust hand fabricated chassis. We partnered with our existing CNC metal fab house to build a 12 gauge steel chassis with bracing that could support the 40lbs of transformers without a hint of strain. In total, the Nautilus is 55lbs before packing. We additionally choose to cover all the transformers and business end of the amp with a gorgeous chrome cover.
The Nautilus is a classic and decidedly prosaic design, as it employs turrets and point-to-point wiring & there is no silicone, ICs, or regulators. We consider this a standard-bearer of purest audio with an American sensibility. The Nautilus is built in a way few modern amplifiers are. This is not due to intrinsic inferiority, but rather it is impossible to rush and is incredibly expensive to produce. Some of the most familiar tube amps ever produced utilize this method, including; McIntosh, HK, Leek, Quad, & Western Electric. These amplifiers demand to be played and built to last a lifetime.
The Nautilus does not use a voltage divider network but depends on transformers instead. We use multiple dedicated taps for headphones to offer a dedicated selection for the most comprehensive range of headphones.
The Nautilus has been described as a tube integrated amp for personal audio users. We mean by this, the Nautilus allows for five separate impedances to be selected for system matching and has a pair of 8ohm 5 way binding posts. The speaker vs. headphone output is selected with a small toggle switch on the back of the amp. This simple addition was not without compromise. You can choose between headphones or speakers without wiring changes to your system.
Transformers are one of the most special aspects of the amps. The Nautilus performance is made possible with custom wound ultra-high quality output transformers from Transcendar, which provide excellent frequency extension and a flat response.
Cinemag transformers are used as input transformers for XLR to RCA conversion.
The input of Nautilus unitizes input transformers for reduced noise floor, greater clarity, and sub-bass response.
For this reference amplifier, we paired the finest coupling caps, Jupiter copper foil in wax caps. The increases in micro-detail retrieval were remarkable.
Volume control is handled via a 24step stepped attenuator. This ensures precise channel matching.
The Nautilus allows for a wide range of tubes, including 6l6gc through KT90s. KT120s and KT150s are not compatible. The tube complement form factor is spec’d as a matched pair of 6L6GC STR or KT88, a single 12AX7, and two 5AR4 or 5U4 rectifiers.
The Nautilus utilizes a single-ended Class A operation with zero feedback to provide the essence of sound, strictly old-school SET sound.
