Watson sets a new standard on the cost/performance ratio. Elemental Amps is proud to present the Elemental Watson II, a class-A valve/Mosfet hybrid headphone amplifier. A powerful and delicate sound accompanied by the warmth of valves delivered in a compact chassis

By trimming down on unnecessary luxuries and focusing on core performance, the Watson II is able to operate in a dual mono configuration, with a military grade NOS 6AK5 tubes being the centrepiece of each channel’s gain stage. Not only does this deliver rich harmonics typical of single ended class-A valve amps but also reduces warm-up time of the valves significantly whilst extending the life of each valve to operate at their peak performance for more than 1000 hours per channel.

Followed by class-A power MOSFET output stage, it provides almost limitless driving current while preserving the tube’s charming signature. The configuration also guarantees best channel separation (stereo image), easy maintenance and adjustment on the individual channel.

Compared to the original Elemental Watson, the new Watson II now has RCA line-in at the back, 3.5mm line-in at front, 30VDC power supply instedad of 26VDC, and no option to manually adjust pre-amp gain into the tubes.

Following the tradition of Elemental Amps , Sherlock is designed for a no-compromise performance at a very affordable price. During the design process, we took further steps to make Sherlock modular and expandable, from a stereo amp to a fully balanced amplifier. We are pleased that we succeeded in producing the Sherlock with unprecedented driving capability and musicality at a very cost-effective price point.

To arrive at our goal, we trimmed all unnecessary features and cosmetics. We then focused on Sherlock's core competence - the amplification. The kernel of Sherlock is a class-A tube gain stage that dominates the sound quality with the tubes unique signature. This is followed by a single-ended class-A MOSFET power stage to provide plenty of current for demanding headphones. Sherlock's uniqueness is the added bridged circuits ahead of the main amp. These circuits when activated, converts input signals into balanced (positive plus negative polarities) format and feeds to left and right channels. This special design feature turns a tandem pair of Sherlock into a truly stereo balanced amplifier.

Pure Class A Stereo Headphone Amplifier

The new 2019 HA540 MK2 no headphone amp has impressed us more than the Bellari HA540. It is a lush sounding 12AX7 tube headphone amp running 150 regulated volts to the tube plates. With plenty of gain that is uniquely capable of driving headphones rated from 8-2000 Ohms. Having two separate inputs, it’s brilliantly designed to work equally well with different source components. It will produce superb clarity when connected directly to a CD player, computer, phone or DAC. A zero-feedback design guarantees a smooth natural analog response. It will be the thing that kicks your music up a notch, and gets you addicted to this hobby. There is a definite weight to the audio quality, in the sense that everything felt like it had some genuine power driving it.

In a world where headphone amps can cost anywhere from $99 to $1999 and some even $7000. It is hard to find honesty in what is a real true improvement in build quality or sound. How can you read through the online reviews to get a good idea of what to buy when it is clear that some reviews are paid for or that other reviews are not taking into account the full story, in personal experience or knowledge. What I can tell honestly, is that the HA540 is hand built in Salt Lake City, UT by people who have been in the industry for a few decades. We have seen it all, from companies selling the equivalent of snake oil and charging outrageously for it, to honest companies that have unfortunately fallen by the wayside.

The HA540 is an honest and true headphone amplifier. While it is not inexpensive by most standards it is truly an audio bargain for its build and sound quality. It has the lowest amount of ear fatigue of any headphone amp we have heard at any price

LTA microZOTL MZ2 ($1300-2160)

The successor to David Berning's original micro-ZOTL, the MZ2 continues to offer what Berning intended it to: an introduction to ZOTL technology.

Equally a headphone amplifier, integrated amplifier, and preamp, the MZ2 is considered reference-grade for powering almost any headphone, as a 1 wpc amp for extremely efficient speakers, and as a preamp performing well above its price.

Hand-built by our small team just outside of Washington, DC, each MZ2 involves 12 hours of delicate work, including precise hand-winding of several proprietary components, and several days of burn-in and testing.

While technically an OTL amplifier, not having traditional output transformers, the MZ2 is an entirely different kind of circuit that is able to achieve low output impedance and low-current tube operation, which translates to easy matching to almost any headphone or speaker and a very long tube life. ZOTL technology results in amps with the transparency of OTL without the many limitations of OTL designs: purely tube amplification that achieves a theoretically ideal turns ratio and happily interacts with speakers from 2 to 16 ohms, or above. Headphones from 16 to 600 ohms are powered without any hum.

OPTIONS
• Tube Options - We supply NOS 12SN7 tubes by default. Jumpers on the circuit board allow you to easily switch between 12V and 6V, allowing you to use both 6SN7 and 12SN7 tubes and expanding your tube choices. The 12SN7 and 6SN7 are sonically identical and differ only in their heater voltage. 12AU7 tubes can replace the 12AT7 tubes to lower the gain.

• LPS+ Linear Power Supply - the original microZOTL has a switching power supply, which comes with a basic unit. The linear supply (LPS) is a much better supply utilizing super low ESR caps and a super low noise Belleson regulator. You get better sonics with more dynamics.

• Remote Control - the MZ2 remote uses a motorized version of the Alps Blue Velvet pot, which is also used in the non-remote version. Same pot, same sound. No sonic signal degradation. It uses the Apple TV remote control. It is paired to the unit and controls volume only.

• Dual Preamp Outputs - some users desire dual preamp outputs and no speaker binding post outputs. This option is no charge when ordering an amplifier. Please email us your desire for this option just after ordering your amplifier.

• Tall Tube Cover - this is an optional clear cover for the MZ2 with two 1.5 inch holes above the power tubes to allow for alternative tube types that are either on adapters or are taller than standard 6SN7s and 12SN7s..

The MZ3 is the result of three years of refining our flagship amplifier, the microZOTL MZ2. Listeners can enjoy sonic improvements at every level with significant upgrades across the board: new circuit board material, new volume control technology, upgrades in wire, capacitors, tubes, power supply, and sleek case design.

Wrapped in a new control system that is isolated from the analog signal, the amplifier adds another level of fine tuning with remote control, volume level display, and home theater mode.  In a new, low-resonance aluminum chassis custom-designed by Fern & Roby, the MZ3 contains all of the elements that we found elevates your music to a higher level.

There are several integral component upgrades in the audio circuit for wider soundstage, lower noise floor, and substantially improved musicality. Utilizing ceramic circuit boards for the amplifier, we have built the clearest, cleanest sounding microZOTL yet.

Our digital control system features a display for volume level (0-100) and input selection, as well as a remote-controlled, stepped attenuator for volume control.

At 4x the storage of our original PSU, our linear power supply is more refined, with a premium snap-lock interconnect cable and the elimination of turn on-off thumps.

Additionally, through curation of premium tubes and an extended burn-in period, we ensure the amplifiers’ maximum performance right out of the box.

The microZOTL MZ3 represents the highest expression attainable of the microZOTL technology as a headphone amplifier, a preamplifier, and a 1 watt speaker amplifier in the external power supply form factor of the microZOTL MZ2.

Features
• NEW: Updated Volume Control w/ Adjustable Gain & “Hi-Res” Settings .. Now shipping in all unit is our new 8-bit volume control, which gives you 128dB of total attenuation via 100 individual steps. We use precision thin film Nichrome resistors with low thermal noise and ceramic circuit boards with low dialectric content for the highest level of clarity and transparency. For the ultimate in control, you can activate the “Hi-Res” setting in the menu system, which offers 199 steps to dial in exactly the volume level that works best for you. We’ve also added the ability to adjust the gain via the menu system. This adjusts the volume level to allow for finer low-level attenuation when using sensitive speakers or headphones. There are three settings: 0db (default), -15db, and -30dB.
• Balance Control: 100% channel isolation using stored differences of volume values. Maximum balance differential is 16 steps

• Coupling cap upgrade: The six coupling caps on the audio board between the tube stages are upgraded to premium Japanese film caps with gold plated OCC leads.
• Gain Level upgrade: We have added the ability to adjust the gain on the preamp via the menu system. There are two settings: 0db (default) and -10db. This adjusts the volume control to allow for finer low-level attenuation when using sensitive speakers or headphones.

The Amplifier

LTA ZOTL Ultralinear+ Integrated Amplifier ($7650-9150)

The ZOTL Ultralinear+ is the latest ZOTL amplifier design by David Berning, utilizing his Zero-hysteresis output transformerless audio design and his unique power supply.

The ZOTL Ultralinear+ amplifier outputs 20 watts per channel using 17JN6 tubes, a Compactron-style TV sweep tube that can't be easily used in traditional transformer-coupled amplifier designs. The ZOTL circuit is able to take advantage of these great-sounding, under-utilized tubes, and in this case, does so in what can be considered the only ultralinear amp without traditional output transformers.

David designed the amplifier specifically for high efficiency speakers. A balance between triode and pentode mode, the ultralinear topology delivers a less forward presentation which is "more pleasing to listen to.” The ZOTL Ultralinear+ delivers accuracy, detail and realism. Pianos sound like pianos. The bass is controlled but fluid. Very transparent, no hum and very dynamic.

The power supply is an advanced switching supply optimized for audio that only David Berning deploys.

All the benefits of ZOTL technology, including 3 times the tube life, 1/3 the heat, a super wide frequency response of 8hz -60Khz, and a under 2 ohm output impedance to play nicely with all speakers, are all included. There is also a sophisticated speaker protection system to prevent damage to the amplifier and speakers if there ever was a tube issue.

Fern and Roby Audio designed the casework featuring front and rear panels milled from slabs of aluminum, Cardas RCAs, WBT copper binding posts, with all markings laser engraved.

The list of design criteria was long one for the new Dragon amplifiers. The goal was no less than to match the legendary performance levels of the Milo and Headtrip solid state headphone amplifiers at even lower price points with the addition of the incorporation of the musicality of tubes in the design. We started with a list of features that we felt were absolutely required in a product that we wanted to put the Wells Audio name on. First, and an absolute necessity was the ability to drive any headphones on the market regardless of load. It had to also have gain adjustability to work optimally with the most efficient to the least efficient headphones on the market. the ability to use multiple types of tubes as well as have multiple ground settings to maximize noise reduction was also included. The Dragon has a tube gain stage followed by a extremely low noise solid state gain stage. This results in the beauty and attributes of tubes with the current to drive hard-to-drive headphone loads in a way no all tube amplifier can match. The Dragon puts out up to 5 watts of power with up to 1 amp of current drive. This results in a musical presentation that is extremely powerful and quiet with state-of-the-art levels of dynamics, separation, soundstage size, image density, resolution with the anticipated accompaniment of tube harmonics, timbre, linearity and tonal beauty. The Dragon is the most fully realized design yet from Wells Audio and is built in a designed in a modular manner to easily incorporate further levels of further sonic upgrades. There is currently the base Dragon model, followed by the Level II and the Level III.

You could say there are two lines of sight in audio amplification. One route combines high power amplifiers with low efficiency loudspeakers. Our way is different. We created Parallax PL519 as a low power single ended amp to be used with high efficiency loudspeakers. The result is a truly startling level of naturalness, detail, and ease, something not found in audio equipment today.

Parallax is unique in using a little known and very special tube, not technically a triode at all. This tube, the PL519, was a European television sweep tube, built with extreme ruggedness and durability for long term operation. It was never intended to be used as an audio tube. By reconnecting the internal elements of the PL519 in an operation we call Screen Mode, OMA has effectively created a whole new triode tube.

The Parallax is constructed with OMA's typical attention to materials, workmanship, and design ethos. The two chassis are constructed from solid Pennsylvania walnut by hand, as the joinery shows, and finished with a hand rubbed oil and wax finish. The amp itself is built on heavy sheets of steel which are powder coated, and then covered with a slate top plate, which is also an excellent resonance damping device. Unlike many manufacturers who produce a two chassis "monobloc" configuration, the power supply of Parallax is built on one chassis, and the signal is built onto the other. The robust, isolated power supply ensures that the output power of the Parallax exceeds what one expects of an amplifier rated at less than 5 watts.

CONCEPT

At the heart of each Riviera product lies years of research: from the study of non-conventional circuits to specialized manufacturing.

At the root of every new project lies a wealth of research regarding the selection of the highest quality materials to ensure maximum reliability and quality, the production strictly controlled at every phase to guarantee that every component in a Riviera unit is used to its fullest potential to ensure a final product that is second to none in today’s market.

It’s an open secret to every serious audio designer that relying on traditional measurements does not necessarily guarantee audio nirvana; that is why Riviera places such importance in listening to its amplifiers.

In fact, Riviera restarts from the basics and takes great pride in having studied the literature of electroacoustic written in the last hundred years. It was necessary to redefine the electrical characteristics of an audio amplifier. Riviera’s benchmark remains the live listening experience: Riviera’s philosophy is that a Hi-Fi system must be able to reproduce a sound event which is the closest possible to what a listener would hear in a live context.

To achieve these goals Riviera has made specific choices regarding circuitry and applied technologies:

FEATURES

We use the absolutely best available ECC82 today that is in conformity with Rohs and CE regulations. But if you want to really push performance, feel free to use compatible new-old stock. We cannot really officially say that customers are better off substituting our tube, but it's a fact that an NOS Mullard, RT, Philips Miniwatt or RCA black-plate clear top are better than anything produced and legally sellable today.

The PSU was carefully designed not just for raw power but sound. It's about 200VA; sufficient for a 10wpc amp we think. Five power supplies use two transformers, one for pure audio circuits, the other for control and operational services. The tube branch is pi-filtered and stabilized. The power branch uses another pi filter and a 'distributed capacitance' technique. Instead of two big slow capacitors, we prefer many small fast caps, with the last one extremely close to each power transistor. And there are no protection circuits, only fuses on the power rails. Key for the signal path is no global feedback anywhere and just minimal local. The single-ended ECC82 voltage amplifier uses none whatsoever and that stage wholly determines the amp's sonic character. The complementary outputs mix BJT and Mosfet and require no phase splitter or transformer. The motorized Alps sits at the very input before the first stage.

About our manufacture, all mechanical parts are sourced from suppliers who specialize in aerospace and optical mechanics. They operate in the aerospace sector of Naples, one of Italy's most important. They are used to producing short runs with very high quality control. We design all of our PCB with 2mm rather than standard 1.6mm thickness. They are two-sided and with thrice the usual thickness of copper traces and gold plating. Our solder masks are transparent and the boards are populated manually. Many of our parts are extreme-quality industrial types selected for their sound quality because certain audiophile parts are often not that reliable. And the transformers too are our proprietary design and hand-made in Italy.

Finally a few hard specs. Sensitivity is 400mV relative to 10W/8Ω. Input impedance is 50kΩ. Bandwidth at 1 and 10 watts is 11Hz-55kHz -1dB. At -3dB, it's 7Hz-105kHz. Residual noise is 95µV A-weighted. SN/R is 99.7dB A-weighted. Power consumption is 110VA.

ANK is pleased to announce our long awaited Headphone Amplifier! We took advantage of our EL84 and C core technology along with dual tube rectification to develop a stunning and powerful (11w classA) all tube Headphone amplifier that could drive the toughest headphones with ease! 

Our Triple C core technology has a 50Ohm tap on it suitable for a wide range of phones.

The design is based on our popular L1 EL84v2 amplifier which utilizes 4 x EL84 tubes along with a pair of ECF80 drivers. The Triple C core transformers drive the dual  headphone jacks located at the front of the unit.

Let take a look at the Power Supply – We start with a large Mains transformer more commonly found in power amplifiers – Then we use our CH-40W ( choke) that we use for Tube rectified circuits as found in our EL34 monos –

The Power Supply PCB is our dual 5ar4 tube rectified with dual 30uf Mundorf film capacitors. This provides the HT voltage required for the EL84 circuitry – the Filaments for the EL84 are all DC in order to ensure ultra quiet operation.

The Main EL84 PCB is also used in our popular L1 EL84v2 amplifier but with a few modifications to make it pure CLASS A and DC heated filaments – also the interface to the custom headphone C core output transformers is also unique.

Genus 845 Tube integrated amplifier

The Genus SET integrated amplifier is the answer to the challenge of making them smallest possible one-box integrated amplifier which would carry our design philosophy. In development for some years we are proud to announce the release of the ‘Offspring’ or ‘Genus’ to our family of single ended amplifiers.

With a footprint of 520mm x 530mm it is our most compact design to date, yet remains faithful to our no compromise approach. The Genus can fit where it’s bigger brothers are unable to.

The Genus integrated is 25W in Class A1 yet only has two gain stages. It takes key design ideas from our Concero 25 monoblock circuit. It is effectively a small stereo SET amplifier driving a bigger stereo SET in one chassis.

The input / driver stage is a small 0.7W SE amplifier built around the Siemens E280F super triode and is loaded with a double c-core bifilar wound interstage transformer.

This single tube stage offers maximum linearity and bandwidth for maximum transparency. No coupling capacitors are present anywhere in the circuit.

The small SE amplifier uses our proprietary AC link coupling technology to link to the output stage. This technology uses the secondary winding of the first SE amplifier to modulate the biasing circuits of the bigger 845 tube output stage. AC link coupling technology is used in all of our bigger amplifier models.

All  four tubes have independent power supply units (PSUs) which are fed from dual 400V toroid transformers, 800VA total. All four PSUs carry their own choke filtered capacitor bank.

The output stage power supply units again use our super capacitor technology. These top specification film capacitors have one to two orders of magnitude lower ESR and ESL than any electrolytic or film capacitor used in audio today, and have a maximum current surge specification exceeding 1000 amps.

The two 845 directly heated triode (DHT) tubes use triple passively filtered filament PSUs. All DHT tubes and especially the thoriated tungsten filament tubes, are extremely sensitive to noise present in their filament circuits. Our passively filtered system is fault proof and provides an extremely low noise floor with very high bandwidth and, as part our design philosophy, is without feedback.

Bias of all four tubes,both the two the driver and two output tubes can be adjusted on the fly using the built-in bias meter, so you can tailor the sound to your taste, but also monitor tube's current long term.

A self resetting soft start is used to slowly build up the high voltages present and protect the tubes from any current surges at start up.

Volume and input selection is controlled with the amplifier's built in relay system and supplied remote control. We find this far exceeds the sound quality obtained by conventional potentiometers.

Inputs: 4 RCA pairs, 1 XLR pair (balanced). Outputs: Speaker and headphone out. Speaker output impedance is pre-configured on order from 1-16 ohms and comes with a two-position output impedance selector as standard. The headphone out is user switchable to high or low output impedance for maximum compatibility.

Interview excerpt

Interviewer: Are there plans to take your technology into the personal audio/headfi domain?

Stavros Danos: Even though we do not yet have in our portfolio a dedicated personal audio design, our Genus integrated is highly acclaimed as a SOTA headphone amplifier, secondary as integrated speaker amplifier, and many headphone aficionados choose it for their SOTA personal audio systems. We have a number of HP amp designs that were developed over the years and kept in the prototype stage, at least for now. As an example, we have tried some of our proprietary technologies such as the Inverted Triode system, the TriodeFet as well as the NOIES circuits, in a number of HP amplifier implementations using these technologies with extremely good results. I think these designs were (temporarily maybe) victims of bad timing – we have been overwhelmed by the introduction of some new series as well as the expanding of some existing ones. Yes, I stand guilty for the fact that we did not step fully into personal audio yet. It will happen, hopefully soon.
