Generation 2 of the Kenzie OG..

The close of 2021 has brought out more than 18 months of a global pandemic. During these challenging times, we at ampsandsound strengthened our development efforts resulting in new generation of our classic amps.

Though octal input tubes provide a romantic character that had defined the ampsandound house sound, reminiscent of 1950s HiFi, the downside to this approach is a reduced noise floor and dwindling NOS options. With ampsandound moving to a 9pin front end, performance has been increased, NOS tube rolling has become nearly limitless, and yet we were able to enhance the sweetness and tone we are known for. The 9pin front end allows vastly increased options for tone rolling to find your balance and preference.

With our front end's new development, we have improved our amps further, including both subtle and significant changes alike. Notable takeaways include increased power output, reduced noise floor across all our amps, increased bandwidth.

Kenzie..

Like many of our products, the Kenzie headphone amplifier evolved from our earlier designs – in this case, rave reviews about the SE-84’s headphone section. The inevitable question followed; why didn’t we build a dedicated headphone amp?

Why indeed? After some research, we came to the conclusion that a headphone amplifier building on the much loved Darling circuit was the right choice for us. The outstanding performance of the Kenzie headphone amplifier is made possible with custom wound ultra-high quality output transformers providing amazing frequency extension.

The Kenzie does not use a voltage network, and has more than enough power to drive even the most difficult headphones. We chose 32 ohms and 600-ohm output taps to allow use with the widest variety of headphones; everything from Grado Labs, HiFiMan, Audeze, MrSpeakers, Sennheiser, and Beyerdynamic.

The Kenzie showcases the transformers on the chassis to frame in the unique 1626 single-ended tubes. We have included an ALPS volume pot to allow attenuation and simplify the signal path.
The Kenzie is one of the sweetest-sounding headphone amplifiers on the market. The 1626 is commonly referred to as the “Poor Man’s 300B”; offering a similar level of warmth, texture, and soundstage depth.

The 1626 is a WWII-era tube that was used as a transmitter tube in radar installations. The design is shy on pure output, but offers layers of texture and drive, and is paired with a massive choke and robust output transformers for ultra-quiet operation. As with all of our products, parts selection was crucial during this build and each chosen not for price, but for best quality and synergy.

Generation 2 of the Mogwai SE..

Mogwai..

Like many of our products, the Mogwai evolved from our earlier designs, borrowing from the Bigger Ben and Classic Wonder, while embracing the form factor of the Kenzie. The Mogwai offers more than an entry point for tube amps, but a hybrid product, meant for both headphone and loudspeaker use.

Our circuit offers the ability to roll a wide variety of tubes inexpensively and bring increased power to headphones without any sacrifice of design choices that conflict with our values.
The Mogwai combines the features of a full-sized two-channel power amplifier and headphone amplifier in a chassis that is suitable for desktop use.

The Mogwai utilizes single-ended Class A operation with zero feedback to provide the essence of our Classic Wonder sound; strictly old school SET sound, without having to spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on tubes.

The performance of the Mogwai is made possible with custom wound ultra-high quality output transformers from Transcendar, which provide excellent frequency extension and a flat response.
The Mogwai does not use a voltage divider network but depends on transformers instead. We chose a 32 ohm tap for headphones to offer a dedicated selection for the widest range of headphones, and an 8-ohm loudspeaker tap to connect the Mogwai to moderately efficient loudspeakers.

The Mogwai displays its transformers prominently on the chassis to frame in the tube complement, which can vary from a 6L6GC to a KT88.

Volume control is handled by the ALPS volume pot to allow attenuation and simplify the signal path. Zero feedback on the outputs negates the need for a pre-amplifier; an iPhone can drive the Mogwai without issue.

The Mogwai differs from the Kenzie as it aims to provide powerful output while remaining true to classic tube design. As with all ampsandsound products, we strive for a neutral, non-fatiguing sound, and demand that all our products be ultra-quiet in operation. Quiet operation is not just a goal but a guiding principle that shapes all design and implementation choices.

Tube Selection:
Input tube: 5751 or 12AX7
Output tubes: 6L6GC, EL34s, KT66, KT77, KT88, 6550s and KT90s
A personal favorite is the Tungsol 6L6GC STR. Warm, strong and tight bass.
Cathode Bias/automatic bias allows for easy tube changes without adjustment.

Coupling capacitor: Auricap or Jupiter
Input transformer: Yes
Input impedance is 10K ohm with alps pot
Input Sensitivity 2.6V for full power out with input transformers

Power as measured with KT88 power tubes and 5AR4 rectifier
8ohm power: 8.2Watts RMS @ 1khz
Noise on 8ohm tapp @ 350uV RMS

32ohm power: 4.6Watts RMS @ 1khz
Noise on 32ohm tapp @ 400uV RMS

300ohm power: 5.2Watts RMS @ 1khz

Generation 2 of the Kenzie Ovation..

With our front end's new development, we have improved our amps further, including both subtle and significant changes alike. Notable takeaways include increased power output, reduced noise floor across all our amps, increased bandwidth.

Kenzie Ovation..

Like many of our products, the Kenzie Ovation headphone amplifier/power amplifier evolved from our earlier designs - in this case... it came from the the lessons and experiences learned form the Suolo Monos and the Bigger Ben. In both of those previous products we saw how much big iron mattered, and we wondered what would happen if we took the lessons learned from the Bigger Ben and applied them to the Kenzie. From this the Kenzie Ovation was born.

To improve on the Kenzie Encore and the Suolo Monos we needed to go bigger with everything. The PS capacitance was increased, the choke doubled its filtering and our Output transformers doubled in size from the ones used on the Suolo Monos.

The 20 watt output transformers may look like the ones used on the Bigger Ben, however they are specially designed to take advantage of the lower output of Kenzie. The larger core of these  transformers led to the ability to support 5 different impedance: 8, 16 which are great for high efficiency planers. 32 which is perfect for low impedance orthodynamics. The 100ohm is selected to pair well with the Audeze headphones and the 300ohm provides high impedance match for ZMF andSennheiser.

The input of Kenzie Ovation unitizes input transformers for reduced noise floor, greater clarity and sub bass response. For this reference amplifier we paired the finniest coupling caps, Jupiter copper foil in wax caps. The increases in micro detail retrieval were remarkable.
Like many of our products, the Kenzie Ovation is a hybrid product, meant for both headphone and loudspeaker use.

The Ovation, like the Encore and OG Kenzie is one of the sweetest-sounding headphone amplifiers on the market. The 1626 is commonly referred to as the“Poor Man’s 300B”. The Ovation expands on this by bringing the same tonal balance and sonic signature to high efficiency speakers thanks to its 8 ohm speaker output.

The heart of the Ovation is the 1626 triode which is a WWII-era transmitter tube in radar installations. The design is shy on pure output, but offers layers of texture and drive. Like all good tube amplifiers, the Kenzie Ovation ships with a full set of NOS tubes.

The Kenzie Ovation differs from the Bigger Ben as it aims to provide romantic full sound, with a focus on low noise operation. While all of our amps are quiet, the Ovation is the quietest amp we have ever produced.

Both the Ovation and Bigger Ben are reference headphone amplifiers, choosing between the two comes down the types of headphones you use. If you need raw power the Bigger Ben is the right amp for you, if you primarily use Othodynamics or high efficiency planar magnetic headphones (HE1000SE as an example) the Kenzie Ovation will leave you speechless with its detailed and and romantic presentation.

When we heard it for the first time, we thought it deserved a standing ovation, hence its name.

Generation 2 of the Bigger Ben..

Bigger Ben..

The Bigger Ben started life as 2nd channel adaptation of the Mogwai. It employed huge transformers and was a Class A beast. With the development of the Mogwai SE, the Bigger Ben became redundant as the Mogwai SE is such an overachiever. With the development of the Suolo and Pendant monos, we had worked to push the boundaries of what we were currently offering. The Mogwai SE Rev 2 became the 1st to benefit from the trickle-down development process. The work led to further transformer improvements. We proved that larger transformers yielded increased resolution, clarity, and flatter frequency response.

With a request of a long-time customer who wanted a power amp for his headphone and wanted the widest bandwidth we could produce; we set about resurrecting the Bigger Ben.

To improve the Mogwai SE we needed to go bigger with everything. The PS capacitance was increased, the choke nearly doubled its filtering and our output transformers doubled in size. The larger core of the output transformers led to the ability to out even a great variety of output impedances.

Ampsandsound Rockwell ($5800)

Ampsandsound Rockwell.jpg
Ampsandsound Rockwell.jpg (240.99 KiB) Vist 28224 gange

The ampsandsound Rockwell brings the legendary Direct Heated Triode sound to personal audio. We chose the 6B4G as it stand tall next to other top shelf triodes while still being accessible in NOS form. Combining a single gain stage, zero feedback, and careful attention to grounding techniques, we can use a the Large 6B4G Triode with headphones without hum or noise.

The Rockwell tube amp pairs a 6SL7 tube for the front end with tube rectification enabling excellent transient peeks, faster/livelier presentation, and ultra-quite operation. The Rockwell uses direct-heated triodes with zero feedback providing the classic single-ended sound so widely loved.

Typical of all ampsandsound amplifiers, the power supply is massive. This, combined with a generous choke, yields our trademark low noise; less than 1.5mV at the idle, and stable output of 3 watts RMS into an 8ohm load and 2 watts into a 32ohm headphone. Frequency response is 12hz to 30hz at 1 watt, 1-dB. Carefully selected output iron reduces distortion and increases frequency response. And of course, we also use our 5% capacitors and 2% resistors.

The motivation of the Rockwell is to provide access to the wide availability of NOS tubes and give the warm mid-range bloom that is at the heart of single-ended direct-heated triode designs. Tube set included.

Ampsandsound Nautilus ($9200)

Ampsandsound Nautilus.jpg
Ampsandsound Nautilus.jpg (381.71 KiB) Vist 36189 gange

The Nautilus is our flagship Personal Audio Tubed Integrated Amplifier.

The Story of the Nautilus is born of the same process that brought the Zions. We set out to build my private amps apart from ampsandsound. These were to be mine without branding and never to leave for demos. All too often, my own listening space was sacrificed for the need for demo stock. I choice the HK Cit II as my inspiration point. From that seed came my own Cit II Monos build on turrets just like the best amps of the golden age. Ampsandsound followed with the Sulo monos. The Sulo and Leeloo monos brought turret-based construction and our highest performance to personal audio, but the dual mono layout is not for everyone.

The Nautilus brings the dual-mono layout onto a single chassis. We start with our most versatile circuit, the Mogwai, and go about creating two separate amps that share a single chassis. 2 Power Transformers, Separate Power Supplies, Chokes, and input transformers. The amps are built with separate turret boards, with the one shared component being the input tube, volume control, and outputs. We were unconstrainted with parts selection and layout and chose the most robust power transformer and widest/least distortion output transformers we could find.

The Nautilus’ hand build nature and part selection necessitated a robust hand fabricated chassis. We partnered with our existing CNC metal fab house to build a 12 gauge steel chassis with bracing that could support the 40lbs of transformers without a hint of strain. In total, the Nautilus is 55lbs before packing. We additionally choose to cover all the transformers and business end of the amp with a gorgeous chrome cover.

The Nautilus is a classic and decidedly prosaic design, as it employs turrets and point-to-point wiring & there is no silicone, ICs, or regulators. We consider this a standard-bearer of purest audio with an American sensibility. The Nautilus is built in a way few modern amplifiers are. This is not due to intrinsic inferiority, but rather it is impossible to rush and is incredibly expensive to produce. Some of the most familiar tube amps ever produced utilize this method, including; McIntosh, HK, Leek, Quad, & Western Electric. These amplifiers demand to be played and built to last a lifetime.

The Nautilus does not use a voltage divider network but depends on transformers instead. We use multiple dedicated taps for headphones to offer a dedicated selection for the most comprehensive range of headphones.

The Nautilus has been described as a tube integrated amp for personal audio users. We mean by this, the Nautilus allows for five separate impedances to be selected for system matching and has a pair of 8ohm 5 way binding posts. The speaker vs. headphone output is selected with a small toggle switch on the back of the amp. This simple addition was not without compromise. You can choose between headphones or speakers without wiring changes to your system.

Transformers are one of the most special aspects of the amps. The Nautilus performance is made possible with custom wound ultra-high quality output transformers from Transcendar, which provide excellent frequency extension and a flat response.

Cinemag transformers are used as input transformers for XLR to RCA conversion.

The input of Nautilus unitizes input transformers for reduced noise floor, greater clarity, and sub-bass response.

For this reference amplifier, we paired the finest coupling caps, Jupiter copper foil in wax caps. The increases in micro-detail retrieval were remarkable.

Volume control is handled via a 24step stepped attenuator. This ensures precise channel matching.

The Nautilus allows for a wide range of tubes, including 6l6gc through KT90s. KT120s and KT150s are not compatible. The tube complement form factor is spec’d as a matched pair of 6L6GC STR or KT88, a single 12AX7, and two 5AR4 or 5U4 rectifiers.

The Nautilus utilizes a single-ended Class A operation with zero feedback to provide the essence of sound, strictly old-school SET sound.

VinylSavor E55L Headphone Amplifier - Variant A (€5000)

VinylSavor E55L-A.jpg
VinylSavor E55L-A.jpg (369.89 KiB) Vist 67756 gange

In most cases my line preamplifiers can drive headphones without any problem. But certain headphones with 32 Ohms impedance are a too heavy load for a preamp. Typically they are too sensitive to be connected to a power amp, even if it is a flea power single ended one. So in such cases a dedicated headphone amp which acts as buffer after the preamp is the ticket.

This is how the E55L single ended headphone amp was born. It is meant to drive the Grado RS1 which is very sensitive (1mW for 96dB SPL) and has a 32 Ohms impedance.  The E55L triode connected delivers more than enough power for that and has just the right gain. So the amp can be kept rather simple with just a single E55L stage per channel.

The circuit follows my usual approach in power amps. Output transformers are Hashimoto. The E55L runs at a moderate 30mA. The power supply is tube rectified with a 6BY5 augmented with UF1007 diodes to create a full wave bridge. Several LC filter stages after rectification. This guarantees a hum free operation even with these sensitive headphones.

There are 3 outputs connected to the 4, 8 and 16 Ohm taps of the output transformers. The headphones work on either of them. Selecting different output provides some additional gain control.

VinylSavor E55L-B.jpg (359.62 KiB) Vist 67756 gange

Last month I showed the first headphone amp I ever built. That one was meant to be used with a preamplifier, hence it did not have input selector or volume control. This month I finished another version of that, this time with input selector switch and a volume attenuator at the input so sources can be connected directly to it.

It is based on the same circuit and component selection as the previous one, just with the selector added and a resistive ladder type volume control.

While the previous one had all the taps of the output transformers brought out to individual jacks, this only uses one of them to make room for the control switches.

Output tubes are triode wired E55L and the rectifier is the 6BY5.

UltraSonic Oblivion (€1750)

UltraSonic Oblivion.jpg
UltraSonic Oblivion.jpg (184.02 KiB) Vist 52656 gange

The topology is fully balanced, open loop (no gNFB) amp with parafeed transformer output. The input stage is single ended, followed by CCS loaded source followers that drive the output tube grids. The grid drivers relieve the input tube of any drive duty. Tubes do only voltage amplification. Tubes do what they do best and FETs do what they do best, supply current.

The LTP output stage is perfectly balanced by using a very powerful CCS in the tail. All tube anodes are gyrator loaded. Both B+ and B- supplies are regulated.

This amp can drive most headphones from very low impedance up to high impedance with ease. It’s also capable of driving speakers.

The speaker outputs are also balanced, meaning the black terminal is not ground but is carrying signal in anti-phase to the red terminal. This is a great way to drive a speaker coil.

Specifications
Dimensions:
• Height: 225mm including spikes and tubes.
• Depth: 350mm incl. knobs and speaker outputs.
• Width: 435mm, faceplate is 450mm
Tubes:
• 2 x 6AT6 for input stage (or 6AV6 with speaker outputs)
• 4 x EL81 for output stage

UltraSonic Silver Citadel.jpg
UltraSonic Silver Citadel.jpg (70.19 KiB) Vist 35976 gange

The topology is fully balanced, open loop (no gNFB) amp with parafeed transformer output. Citadel is all balanced. Fully balanced means each stage from XLR inputs, the potentiometer, all active stages and output are balanced, from start to finish. CCS loaded source followers drive the output tube grids. The grid drivers relieve the input tube of any drive duty. Tubes do only voltage amplification. Tubes do what they do best and FETs do what they do best, supply current.

All tube anodes are gyrator loaded. Both B+ and B- supplies are regulated.

Citadel gets rid of any “impurities” that the SE input stage in Oblivion might add. This gives the amp a cleaner sound with even lower THD while Oblivion will have some of the old “tube sound”.

Dimensions:
• Height: 225mm including spikes and tubes (260mm for Silver Citadel)
• Depth: 350mm incl. knobs and speaker outputs(380mm for Silver Citadel)
• Width: 435mm, faceplate is 450mm (280mm for Silver Citadel)
Tubes:
• 2 x 6H9C (6SL7) for input stage
• 4 x 6P31S (EL36) for output stage (4 x 6P7S for the Silver Citadel)
Inputs:
• Balanced 2 x 3-pin XLR

UltraSonic Infinity (€2350)

UltraSonic Infinity.jpg
UltraSonic Infinity.jpg (149.29 KiB) Vist 35117 gange

Infinity is a SET, single ended triode, amp with open loop (no gNFB) and parafeed output. The input stage, using the 6AV6 tube, is grid (fixed) biased. Followed by CCS loaded source followers that drive the output tube grids. The grid drivers relieve the input tube of any drive duty. Tubes do only voltage amplification. Tubes do what they do best and FETs do what they do best, supply current.

The output stage is also SE and grid biased, using the 6P36S tube. All tube anodes are gyrator loaded. Both B+ and B- supplies are regulated.

Infinity will have more of the old tube sound than Oblivion and Citadel has. This is because it’s single ended. The balanced amps cancels a lot of distortion and are also constant current draw amps, while Infinity is not. It’s a matter of taste what sound signature you prefer.

Infinity can drive speakers as well as headphones. Highest power output is into 8 ohms around 5W.

Specifications
Dimensions:
• Height: 265mm incl. anti-vibration feet and tubes.
• Depth: 420mm incl. knobs and speaker outputs.
• Width: 435mm, faceplate is 450mm

UltraSonic Eternity.jpg
UltraSonic Eternity.jpg (73.27 KiB) Vist 28338 gange
(Note: This picture of Eternity is not the stock version. It has many add-ons including tube rolling.)

Eternity is basically a low power version of Infinity. A SET, single ended triode, amp with open loop (no gNFB) and parafeed output.

The output stage is also SE and grid biased, using the 6S19P tube. All tube anodes are gyrator loaded. Both B+ and B- supplies are regulated.

Eternity, just like Infinity, will have more of the old tube sound than Oblivion and Citadel has. This is because it’s single ended. The balanced amps cancels a lot of distortion and are also constant current draw amps, while Eternity is not. It’s a matter of taste what sound signature you prefer.

Eternity can drive efficient speakers as well as headphones. Power output is 3W into 8 ohms.

UltraSonic Odyssey

UltraSonic Odyssey.jpg (102.76 KiB) Vist 28338 gange

Besides my regular offerings I also do completely custom builds. Contact me with your idea and I’ll let you know if it can be done!

Price: Varies according to part selection.

Here’s a custom SET amp called Odyssey

This amp differs a lot from my other amps as Odyssey is an “old school” type design with series feed output transformers. This type of design relies more on part selection. So, big custom output transformers and boutique caps are used throughout. Driver tubes are EL11’s or 6SL7. A variety of dual triode tubes can be used in the 6SL7 socket though. Output tubes are KT88’s with lots of tube rolling options as well. Rectifier is a GZ34 but other rectifiers can be used as well.

Odyssey can drive speakers with ease. It has about 15W of power into 8 ohms in triode mode and 20W in ultralinear mode. Any dynamic/planar headphones on the market can be driven as well from 8 ohms and up.

Odyssey can be configured in many different ways. SET like this one or push pull. Biased around different tubes, different add-ons, inputs, outputs etc..

UltraSonic Telemachus (€3500)

UltraSonic Telemachus.jpg
UltraSonic Telemachus.jpg (147.99 KiB) Vist 27738 gange

Telemachus is a SET 300B amp. It uses a 6SN7 cascode input stage followed by a MOSFET source follower, or “grid driver”, that drives the 300B grid. The output is then a traditional series feed output with high quality output transformers.

This gives Telemachus the best of both worlds. Fast transients and speed due to the grid drivers while still maintaining the beautiful 300B sound!

The 300B filaments have regulated 5VDC power supplies for lowest noise. The high voltage power supply can be made both unregulated, if you wish to use rectifier tube, or regulated using SS diode rectification and a Maida style regulator.

I measured a clean 12.5W of power into 8 ohms so this amp can drive any headphone as well as speakers.

Dimensions:
• Height: 270mm incl. transformers
• Depth: 420mm incl. knobs and speaker outputs.
• Width: 430mm.

Price: Starts at 3500 EUR excl tubes, add-ons and shipping.

UltraSonic Studios - Models & Versions

UltraSonic Studios.jpg
UltraSonic Studios.jpg (529.16 KiB) Vist 28338 gange

UltraSonic Studios - Design deliberations

This design has been arrived at during several years by Mika Kalm aka MrCurwen. It’s quite well thought out, the individual parts complement each other. It was originally designed to avoid using boutique parts and instead use less known, still mostly undiscovered high quality but low price parts. Furthermore the design was made in such a way that diminishes reliance on parts.

In Oblivion the input stage is single ended while Citadel’s input stage is balanced. After the input stage, in both amps, are balanced CCS loaded source followers that drive the output tube grids.

The grid drivers serve two functions:

• Relieve the previous stage of any drive responsibilities. This includes the coupling capacitor; the capacitor is basically completely transparent when placed in front of a FET gate.
• Properly drive all the parasitics of the tube grid. All tubes draw some amount of grid current much before grid going positive. For best results, this must be accounted for, and the way to accommodate it is not thru a capacitor which is the traditional way.

The grid drivers improve transient response, they make the sound more ‘fast’ and dynamic. The technical reasons for this are 70% relating to the grid and Miller capacitance and 30% related to the coupling capacitor. The follower deals with both of them in a brute force manner.

All tubes have gyrator plate loads that provide a practically flat loadline for the tubes. This eliminates individual tube distortions. Also the balanced stages have a very powerful tail CCS, which eliminates practically all imbalances caused by tube mismatch. Matched tubes are not necessary with this design.

Everybody knows that a tube amp lives or dies by it’s output transformer. A not-so-good output transformer will traditionally always lead to a not-so-good amp. All OT’s are a bit problematic technically, so you should always buy the most expensive one.

These amps utilizes a technical solution which gets around this. OT price is no longer an issue! This is achieved by two design choices: no DC is passed through the OT primary, and the signal to the OT primary is driven by a low impedance source. These choices were not readily available in the past, but now they enable us to get rid of OT related imperfections.

Here you have two imperfect solutions (‘weak’ follower and an OT) that in effect cancel out each other’s weaknesses. The OT primary is such an easy load that the weak follower is overkill for the job (even a tube can manage it!) and produces no distortion, and the imperfect OT is so ‘overdriven’ that it’s parasitics disappear. It doesn’t produce any distortion. The idea of OT’s as distortion producers is a relic from ages past where you only had very compromised ways of driving the primary. Since the output is parafeed there’s no DC flowing in the OT primary. The OT doesn’t need to be of boutique quality because it is driven to transparency as it is.

Both the B+ and B- power supplies are each regulated with a two FET regulator which keep the PSU output voltages rock solid, they don’t fluctuate with the signal on heavy transients. That combined with the constant current draw from the audio circuit make the power supply practically “perfect”. Meaning it doesn’t affect the signal in any way.

Both Oblivion and Citadel are designed with the same ideology in mind. The major difference between the two models is lower THD and less harmonics in the all balanced Citadel vs Oblivion. It’s a matter of taste; some prefer a touch of “tube sound” while others prefer full transparency.

Sonnare The Emotion ($1800)

Sonnare Audio The Emotion.jpg
Sonnare Audio The Emotion.jpg (174.32 KiB) Vist 58272 gange

4P1L D.H.T.  S.E. headphone amplifier

The Emotion is Sonnare Audio’s first commercial product. It is the culmination more than 20 years of research by Founder Daniel Cheever, MSEE, The designs’ topology has its roots in the Research work Daniel spent throughout a 7 year effort on this 2001 Masters Thesis “A NEW METHODOLOGY FOR AUDIO FREQUENCY POWER AMPLIFIER TESTING BASED ON PSYCHOACOUSTIC DATA THAT BETTER CORRELATES WITH SOUND QUALITY”. Indeed the roots of this type of circuit topology sprang from even earlier investigations into the unique and astounding sound qualities of single ended triode amplifiers. These amplifiers measure questionable “FTC THD” but sound sublimely musical.

The EMOTION will drive all Planar Magnetic or Dynamic Headphones. The output is transformer coupled with a custom gapped transformer wound in U.S.A. The 8ohm output tap is used. For higher impedance headphones the reflected impedance back to the tube is raised and thus the peak output voltage significantly exceeds the capabilities of solid state amplifiers of similar output power. The amplifier takes advantage of the lowest distortion power amplifying device known, of any age, any technology: the Soviet 4P1L. Each is configured single-ended as a Directly Heated Triode. These tubes are available in large quantities and are the darling of the Russian and German low powered amplifier craze.

The distortion profile at all drive levels contains only 0.2 % 2nd harmonic distortion, with the 3rd harmonic at ~~ 0.05%, masked by the 2nd. Most importantly the balance between these harmonics does not change in ratio dynamically.  Sonnare believes the alarming sound clarity is unique because of the use these ultra-low distortion devices connected in a unique, patent-pending topology, NOT in spite of circuit simplicity or the use of vacuum tubes.

Nagra Classic Preamp (€15900)

Nagra Classic Preamp.jpg
Nagra Classic Preamp.jpg (141.95 KiB) Vist 58080 gange

Class A tube stereo preamplifier

Nagra’s engineers have taken as a starting point the critically acclaimed Nagra JAZZ preamplifier and, incorporating elements of the design philosophy that characterises the HD DAC, have created a preamplifier that delivers even more performance and musicality for an exceptional listening experience.

The CLASSIC PREAMP is the ideal partner for the Nagra CLASSIC AMP and CLASSIC DAC.

FEATURES

DESIGN
• Extended chassis common to the CLASSIC range allows a greater number of components to be used compared to the Nagra JAZZ. This allows greater filtering of the internal power supplies for an improved listening experience. This design philosophy was first seen on the HD DAC and inspires the entire CLASSIC range.

ELECTRONICS
• Bespoke polypropylene capacitors created especially for the CLASSIC PREAMP are used for decoupling and interstage to deliver exceptional performance.
• Wide frequency response and linear phase response provided by no-compromise design and high quality custom-made components.
• Separate multiple ultra low-noise right and left channel power supplies create a larger and more realistic soundstage.
• High-quality headphones amplifier circuit is the same as that employed by the Nagra HD DAC.

CONNECTIVITY
• 1 x XLR and 4 x RCA inputs enable the CLASSIC PREAMP to be connected to a variety of sources.
• 2 x XLR and 1 x RCA outputs allow the CLASSIC PREAMP to be connected to two power amps if required for a monobloc solution.
• A true bypass XLR connector allows the machine to be hooked up to a high-end home cinema to benefit from a power amp downstream and provide a neat cabling solution.
• Optional input and output transformers are available separately to create a fully symmetrical floating signal that will further enhance performance. These transformers are hand-wound in-house by Nagra in order to meeting the exacting standards of the design brief.

POWER SUPPLY
• On-board internal power-supply allows direct connection to the mains, a feature shared with the CLASSIC DAC. This solution, which obviates the need for the external Nagra ACPS II power supply delivered separately with other Nagra units nonetheless produces superior performance. Should the customer desire, the CLASSIC PREAMP can be powered by Nagra’s dedicated MPS power supply via the 12 V DC Lemo connector on the rear panel to provide additional performance gains.

USER-FRIENDLY DESIGN
• Front panel with LCD screen, similar to the Nagra CLASSIC DAC so that each input can be named. An intuitive menu allows access to custom settings as well as operating time. All functions are accessible via a provided remote.
• Traditional Nagra Modulometer showing the output level.
• Output gain is switchable between 0 and 12 dB via a switch on the front panel to achieve optimal gain whatever the nature of the source.
• Same dimensions as the other elements in the Nagra CLASSIC range allowing for neat and aesthetic stacking in the building of a complete Nagra system from various components.

Nagra TUBE DAC (€21000)

Nagra Tube DAC.png
Nagra Tube DAC.png (733.34 KiB) Vist 52775 gange

The Nagra TUBE DAC is a no-compromise D/A converter that can reproduce DSD 256 and 384 kHz PCM signals with an unparalleled natural rendition.

Following the path to high definition sound laid down by the world-acclaimed HD DAC, we wanted to offer the latest sampling frequencies and resolution. We took the opportunity of extending the HD DAC X project with a whole new digital interface and converter to update and upgrade the HD DAC.

The new digital core is built on the experience gained from the HD DAC. The design features an entirely new converter as well as a new USB interface. The result is highly impressive and also a major improvement in every format, even regular red-book CD through S/P Dif, for instance.

The TUBE DAC is designed to convert a digital signal to analog with total integrity and without introducing the slightest impurity or coloration to the original sound. This objective has been totally achieved, and sound has never reached such a true level of definition.

The effort put into the design and exactitude of the Nagra TUBE DAC was exceptional from every perspective. Its circuits, which adopt the DSD 4x (Direct Stream Digital 256) run at the highest resolution available today, 256 times that of a standard CD and four times that of SACD.

The analog section was also the object of a no-holds-barred approach. Thanks to the quality of the signals supplied from the digital conversion circuits, the traditional steep slope filters have been totally eliminated. The consequence of this is the preservation of transients and harmonics, enabling the music to present an exceptionally natural sound. Some of the critical design elements include ultra-high-performance drivers, hand-wound transformers and a tube-driven output stage.

There are 25 precision ultra-low-noise internal power supplies that drive the unit, giving each element its own independent and pure supply source. The Nagra TUBE DAC converter needs two external power supplies, one for the digital section and the other for the analog, keeping the two sections independently isolated. It should be paired up with the Nagra CLASSIC PSU unit to attain its ultimate performance although it is also compatible with the previous generation power supply, the Nagra MPS.

The TUBE DAC is equipped with extensive connection possibilities, allowing integration in all types of domestic and professional systems. It is particularly suited to computer environments thanks to its new generation audio USB input, through which it receives signals up to the DSD 256 format from a PC or MAC.

Specifications
• Internal processing: 11.2 MHz, 72 Bits
• Compatible digital formats: PCM 24 bits up to 384 kHz, DXD, DSD 256
• Bandwidth: 5Hz to 40 kHz (+0 – 3dB)

Heat is the enemy of amplifier reliability. Because this is a Class A design, there is some heating of the unit which causes the wiring to age and degrade over time. Our wire never ages. The teflon coating will last a lifetime. The interior of your amplifier will look the same in 10 years as it looks coming off of the production line. The amplifier is designed using all 18 gauge wire to provide many times more the current density than can be achieved using printed wire boards or lower quality wiring.
• Auto Bias– Self Bias circuit for adjustment free operation and longest tube life. Customer does not need to adjust tube bias. As the tubes age, they adjust for bias changes automatically. The customer can change tubes at any time or replace a single tube rather than the full set of 4 and the amp will automatically re-bias for the change.
• Class A Design – All amplifiers are a full Class A design yielding the ultimate accuracy in music reproduction.
• Pentode Input Stage Utilizing An EF86 – This is an ultra low noise, high gain tube designed for high fidelity applications and has an internal shielding network. All of the overall gain is in this single stage. This significantly reduces phase distortion and yields a dynamic, stable soundstage with terrific dimensionality.
• Burn-In Process – Each amplifier undergoes a rigorous 100 burn-in prior to acceptance testing. This drives out any component infant mortality problems and ages each amplifier into it’s perfect listening range.
• Supplied Power Cable – The EHF200 and EHF200MK2 amplifiers are equipped with our proprietary Quiet Cable utilizing Furutech power connectors and our Military Standard 16878 Teflon, Silver plated wire.
• Manufacturing Process – All amplifiers are built using our own Statistical Process Control manufacturing processes that yield better than a 99.8% first pass yield. This is better than the airline industry’s or hospitals’ safety record. The finished amplifier is 100% reliable, tested and guaranteed for a lifetime.
• Binding Posts – We use Furutech binding posts for all amplifier designs. These are solid copper posts milled from OFC copper billets and then Rhodium plated with carbon fiber insulators. They are simply the best the industry has to offer. All inputs are gold plated RCA connectors.
• Operating Modes – The EHF200 and EHF200MK2 amplifiers come equipped with a triode ultralinear modeswitch for on the fly switching. This feature allows the listener to set the operating mode to affect sound stage and linearity of playback.
• Flexibility – The EHF200MK2 comes with a preamplifier input allowing the use of a favorite line preamplifier stage. It also has a tuned subwoofer output especially tuned so that music out of the subwoofer frequency range is not reflected back into the amplifier effecting the main channel performance.
• Power Measurement System – Each amplifier has a tuned, power measurement system that allows for flawless system integration and adjustment.
Remote Control– The EHF200 MK2 utilizes a 100% analog remote volume control. This feature eliminates any solid state components in the signal path which can compromise the analog, tube sound. Thisfeature is available as an addition to the EHF100 and EHF200 amplifiers.
• Shipping – Each amplifier is shipped using a 2 box, double wall container system that has diecut, highdensity and low density foam vibration absorption material. This shipping system is designed to withstand a drop on all 6 box sides from 3 feet and produce no amplifier damage. We have NEVER had an amplifier returned for shipping damage.
• Tube Interchangeability – The EHF200 series can use the KT120 or KT150 interchangeably. The power supply and grid bias network is robust enough to support either. We typically ship with the KT150.

TOR AUDIO Nick HEADAMP ($520)

Tor Audo Nick.jpg
Tor Audo Nick.jpg (634.94 KiB) Vist 60479 gange

The first self-made tube amplifier with toroidal audio transformers.

The circuit has been created by us independently, we did not use any ready-made technical solutions, but found our own. We have spent more than two years experimenting with the circuit and transformers, but the results justify the time and effort spent.

To get a natural, lifelike sound we had to abandon conventional audio transformers. Instead we decided to use such exotic things as toroidal audio transformers. This is the most complicated part, toroidal transformers take approximately 80% of the time required for the manufacturing of the device, but they sound great.

Gain Stage is assembled on a dual triode 6N8S (equivalent to 6SN7). We only use triodes, because they have the lowest internal resistance, which has a positive effect on the quality of sound.

No detail is left without our attention, every tube, resistor and capacitor is selected and checked. Each item has a double margin of power and voltage, whereby the circuit has a high reliability and durability.

Each unit is assembled by hand; the production of body parts, transformer winding, assembly and adjustment of the circuit.

Tor Audio Syd.jpg (208.26 KiB) Vist 52701 gange

The first self-made fully balanced headphone tube amplifier with toroidal audio transformers

The amplifier operate in ‘A’ mode.. There are a lot of modes of operation of amplifiers, such as A, B, AB, C, D ... ‘A’ mode stands apart from all others, because only this mode is designed for high sound quality at the expense of power. The rest of the modes operate to get maximum power at the expense of sound quality.

Toroidal Audio Transformers.. The most critical part in the tube amplifier is a sound transformer. We decided to use such exotic things as toroidal audio transformers. This is the most complicated part, toroidal transformers take approximately 80% of the time required for the manufacturing of the device, but they sound great.

Triodes.. We only use triodes, because they have the lowest internal resistance, which has a positive effect on the quality of sound.

If you don’t like the sound for some reason you can return the amplifier and get the money back without looking into causes. (Money Back Guarantee - 14 Days)

Audio-Classic Head Amp E88 (€780)

Audio-Classic Head Amp E88.jpg
Audio-Classic Head Amp E88.jpg (388.53 KiB) Vist 60238 gange

Head Amp E88 with Interstage transformers

Most amplifiers use capacitors in the signal path. In Head Amp E88 we use interstage transformers to achieve the best sound obtainable, as the use of capacitors affects (colors) the sound.

The amplifier is hand-built using point-to-point wiring and select components. The power supply is pcb, though.

The tubes are E88CC (6922). They are regulated exactly to 6.3 V DC, which is of great importance to the sound. E88CC is a nice musical tube at a reasonable price. Being widely available it also offers ample opportunity for Tube Rolling.

Sonically this amplifier is a delightful experience. Everything is in its right place and sounds fantastic, regardless of which music is played. Bass guitar, church organ, voices, the amplifier does it all. The amplifier is never being pushed. You'll quickly discover if your CD or LP is properly recorded, though.

The amplifier can be used on its own, connected directly to the source (DAC, CD-player, ao), or it can be connected to a preamplifier output (through tape out or signal out).

The amplifier casing is made of a black steel plate with wooden side panels in mahogany. The steel plate is filled, and painted twice. Optionally the casing is available in stainless steel with mahogany side panels. A new design using a 1.5mm black lacquered steel plate is available as well.

Tube sockets and RCA connectors are gold-plated to prevent corrosion but also to achieve the optimal connection.

New amplifiers and tubes need apprx 50 hours of burn-in. The amplifeir will sound at its best after apprx a half hour of operation.

• Interstage transformers
• Select and premeasured components
• Blue ALPS potentiometer, optionally motorized
• 6,35 mm headphone jack
• Impedance range: 20 – 500 ohms
• SNR: 90 db
• Dimensions: 18 x 20 x 14 cm
• Chassis: Black or stainless steel plate with mahogany side panels
• CE approved
• Designed and manufactured in Denmark
• Lead time is 1-2 weeks
