The ECP Audio / Beezar Torpedo Headphone Amplifier

ECP Audio - Beezar Torpedo.jpg
ECP Audio - Beezar Torpedo.jpg (250.65 KiB) Vist 36500 gange

It's been a long time coming; Dsavitsk started looking for builders for his prototype of the Torpedo, a CCS loaded, transformer coupled parafeed headphone amplifier back in March of 2010. The Torpedo is a simplified and more affordable version of the ECP Audio L'espressivo spud headphone amplifier and works with 6J6 tubes and equivalents, including the 5964 and 5844. The shortkit was just recently made available in December 2011 on Beezar after a number of DIY enthusiasts built the initial prototype and includes the chassis, custom transfomers from Edcor and the PCB. The remainder of the parts are listed in the bill of materials and can be purchased from the usual suspects (Mouser, Digikey, etc.). The total build cost, if not going crazy, should fall under $300.

Schiit Valhalla 2.jpg (153.62 KiB) Vist 36500 gange

Go ahead. Do things with Valhalla 2 that you’d never attempt with other OTL tube amps. Run low-impedance headphones. Use IEMs. Valhalla 2 is a complete re-imagining of Valhalla, with improved performance, higher output capability, lower distortion and output impedance.

While most tube OTL amps are really only designed for 300 ohm Senns and 600 ohm Beyers, Valhalla 2 stretches to include headphones that you’d never expect to use with a tube amp. Many people use Valhalla 2 with sensitive, lower-impedance headphones as well.

Valhalla 2 also adds two important features: preamp outs and a gain switch. Preamp outs let you connect your powered monitors directly to Valhalla 2, to give them some of what some people call “tube magic.” The gain switch gives you better control of both output level and impedance, for better matching to your headphones. It's easy to build a complete desktop system around the Valhalla.

If you’re expecting syrupy, tubby, euphonically colored tube sound, you’re in for a shock. Valhalla 2 is exceptionally accurate, neutral, and resolving, without being strident or etched.

Hybrid Modular Headamp/DAC/Phone Preamp

To improve on Lyr 2, we had to completely reinvent the amp, introduce two new technologies, and make it modular. Yes, that’s right. Not only is the new Lyr 3 a big sonic upgrade, it can be configured with the DAC or phono preamp of your choice—just like Jotunheim.

Want to run IEMs? Sure. Need power for your HE-6? Sure. If this means nothing to you, just be confident that you can plug any headphone into Lyr 3 and get great sound. With full power delivered from the standard ¼” jack, you don’t need balanced headphones to take full advantage of Lyr 3.

Select from the internal card or rear-panel analog input, and pick high or low gain with convenient front switches. Connect the preamp output to your powered monitors for a complete desktop system—or use it as a front end to your speaker power amplifier. Lyr 3 provides all the flexibility you need.

Now, you can enjoy a serious tube amp—that only requires a single tube. Our Coherence™ hybrid topology makes the most out of the supplied NOS 6N8S tube, and also works with all NOS and new-production 6SN7 tube types. What’s more, Lyr 3 introduces Continuity™—a constant transconductance output stage which provides superior performance.

Select from two different DAC modules, a phono input module, or no module at all to tailor Lyr 3 exactly to your needs. Modular design means Lyr 3 won’t be dumpster-fodder when technology changes—just swap a card!
- Multibit DAC Module. Choose the optional Multibit DAC Module to get Schiit’s unique digital filter and true multibit DAC architecture, as used in Modi Multibit and Bifrost Multibit, for $200.

Hafler HA75 Tube Head ($1000)

Hafler HA75 Tube Head.jpg
Hafler HA75 Tube Head.jpg (122.83 KiB) Vist 17277 gange

The Hafler HA75 is a â€vintage inspired’ headphone amplifier that has been meticulously designed to produce Hafler’s legendary sound quality while adding excitement and character of a real tube circuit to optimize the listening experience.

The design begins with a 14 gauge steel casing to shield the internal workings from external magnetic fields and RF contamination. This is complimented with a black anodized aluminum front panel for clean, esthetic appeal. A choice of either unbalanced RCA or balanced XLR inputs are available. These are gold-plated to eliminate tarnishing over time while optimizing signal flow.

Inside, a 100% discrete class-A head-amp combines with a 12AX7 tube drive to power the headphones. This employs a unique non-radiating charge pump that applies 140 volts to the tube to maximize headroom as it delivers the character and warmth that so many listeners prefer over solid state counterparts. To simulate the response of listening to loudspeakers in an acoustic space, a Focus control may be engaged that brings the stereo image to the center via a fully variable potentiometer. This active control activates a matrix that delivers exciting results without collapsing the stereo image. A Vox function warms the tone akin to an old-school loudness control, addressing the Fletcher-Munson curves to deliver equal loudness when listening at low levels. The Vox control can also can be used and create a â€boom-box’ effect for those that enjoy a more exaggerated response.

The headphone outputs on the HA75 feature an innovative Load selector, which allows the output of the amplifier to be adjusted for optimization with headphones of any impedance. Combined with the other adjustable controls and the powerful high quality tube drive circuit, the HA75 delivers plenty of warmth and character to truly enhance the listening experience.

Specifications:
• Circuit: Discrete class-A with 12AX7
• Inputs: Switchable RCA or XLR
• Thru-puts: RCA (left/right)
• Output: 1/4" TRS Headphone
• Impedance: 8 Ohm ~ 400 Ohm
• Gain: 30 dB
• Max Output: 5 V RMS

The Hafler HA75-DAC is an audiophile tube-based headphone amplifier and USB digital-to-analog converter, with a number of useful and innovative features that excite and enhance the listening experience.

The uncompromising design of this amplifier builds upon the foundation of the original HA-75, which has received praise from many of the â€golden ears’ of the recording industry for the incredible clarity, warmth, and character provided by its tube-based topology. This same circuitry and 12AX7 tube is employed on the HA75-DAC, with the addition of a USB input for monitoring high-fidelity digital audio up to 192 kHz. Analog inputs are provided via RCA and balanced XLR connectors, and a selector switch on the front of the HA75-DAC allows you to easily switch between analog and digital sources.

A number of additional features allow you to tailor the performance of the HA75-DAC to suit both your listening style and your headphones. The Focus control simulates the experience of listening to speakers in a room, using an active matrix that can be dialed in according to taste. A three-position voicing switch allows you to adapt to the balance of your headphones or the source material by applying a loudness curve or enhancing the bass response; the voicing circuit can also be bypassed for a neutral response. Another exciting addition is the load selector switch, which allows you to tailor the output impedance to match any pair of headphones available.

The chassis of the HA75-DAC is built from 14-gauge steel to block stray magnetic interference, and the back panel features gold-plated RCA connectors to ensure optimal signal transfer. Additional â€thru’ and â€tube out’ RCA outputs allow you to use the HA75-DAC to feed another input device, or connect between a preamp and power amplifier to impart the character of the 12AX7 tube.

The HA75-DAC blends superior engineering with powerful user-controlled features to provide an exceptional and unique listening experience, allowing you to enjoy your music like never before.

UV-1 (UltraViolet) basic preamplifier/headphone power amplifier

The UV-1 (UltraViolet) preamplifier is based on a circuit that we have used for many years, but not marketed before. About 40 years ago, Ralph Karsten began developing his own circuit for use for friends on a budget but with high end audio aspirations. It was originally used as a modification to the venerable Dynaco PAS-3. Over a period of decades, the circuit has seen a lot of refinement. It is a simple circuit (and obviously a complete departure from our other products), based on a very capable and refined 6SN7-based line section with a simple phono section based on 12AT7s. We have seen this preamp best preamps costing up to five times more; when we say 'refined', we mean it!

We never really considered marketing the preamp as it is so different from the rest of our product line. But friends and associates convinced us that we had something special, especially for its price so here it is.

The preamp is available in four forms: a basic line stage, a headphone power amp that also works as a line stage, a full function preamp with high output MM capability, or with the addition of a set of Jensen stepup transformers works with any low output moving coil cartridge as well.

The headphone version of the UV-1 uses the full tube complement of the UV-1. It has four inputs and can be used as a line stage as well. This version does not have a phono section.

EAR HP-4 (€4250)

EAR HP-4.jpg
EAR HP-4.jpg (394.23 KiB) Vist 11915 gange

Tim de Paravicini has long had a worldwide reputation for valve preamplifiers and power amplifiers. Now he has applied his expertise to produce what is arguably the world's finest headphone amplifier aimed at the highest quality dynamic headphones.

The HP4 uses 6SL7 valves, properly matched to the load through de Paravicini's renowned transformers, to deliver nearly 1W of high quality, low distortion power into high or low impedance headphones. The output circuit configuration uses de Paravicini's 'Enhanced Triode Mode', as employed in the highly successful V20 and 859 integrated amplifiers, while the input is also transformer coupled, giving the flexibility to accept balanced or unbalanced signals from the preamplifier.

For the greatest user convenience the HP4 has its own volume control, while input signals can be independently switched through to the power amplifier for headphone and/or loudspeaker listening. As with all EAR products, reliability is paramount and valve life is in excess of 10,000 hours.

AudioValve RKV HAA Edition (€2800, DAC +€1000)

AudioValve RKV HAA.jpg
AudioValve RKV HAA.jpg (156.57 KiB) Vist 16996 gange

RKV 2 now becomes “RKV – HAA” – a very interesting upgrade …

What are you going to ask about it ? The answer is quite simple. Our dutch dealer Headphone Auditions Amsterdam is the sole distributor for this headphone amplifier based on our current Luminare – but without the STAX part. The RKV HAA has been technically adapted and gets a new front as an indication of this upgrade. So the “old” RKV2, as many people know it, can no longer be ordered from AudioValve.

You can order it exclusively at HAA – Stefan Gürtler in AMsterdam. He had some very good ideas to adapt the RKV2 to the current needs of the market. He also became the best advisor for the use of the RKV HAA on various headphones. So if you are thinking about an amplifier for only dynamic or magnetostatic headphones, the new RKV HAA is the right choice and Stefan Gürtler is one of the best  address for your purchase. Thank you for the great cooperation during the development Stefan …

AudioValve Assistent 50-HP.jpg (132.87 KiB) Vist 31420 gange

Legendary design, legendary amplifier. One for all - Speaker/Dynamic/Planar/Electrostatic. Pure Class A tube amplifier.

Our biggest headphone amplifier is the assistant 50 HP with 2 x 50 watts. This amplifier was first developed for loudspeaker applications but is also a fantastic headphone driver. There were several extensions necessary to make the amplifier also as a headphone amplifier to which every conceivable headphone and STAX headphones work. On the front are all current connections of the most common headphone models. The dynamic and magnetostatic headphones are fed from the secondary winding of the output transformer, whereas the STAX models from the primary side of the output transformer become their voltage. The required bias for the STAX membrane was stabilized at 580 VDC. The output transformers are of the highest quality and come from the world famous German company PIKATRON. The combination of a built-in stereo amplifier with 2 x 50 watts and at the same time a full amplifier for each type of headphones results in the price. Assistant 50 HP is therefore more complexe and more expensive than the pure amplifier Assistent 50.

Manley Absolute Headphone Amplifier ($4500)

Manley Absolute Headphone Amplifier.jpg
Manley Absolute Headphone Amplifier.jpg (340.62 KiB) Vist 32262 gange

Manley Labs has been designing and manufacturing professional and high fidelity audio equipment since the late 1980’s. In recent years, we have noticed audiophiles increasingly turning to personal headphone listening. To meet this new demand, Manley has combined its professional and domestic engineering skills and experience to develop an exciting and groundbreaking product, The Manley Absolute Headphone Amplifier.

Headphone listening is not new to us; we have been producing headphone personal “Cue Mixers” for recording studios around the globe for over twenty years. In the HiFi world, our legendary Manley Neo-Classic 300B Preamplifier has become a total cult classic with headphone listeners for the last two decades. Reaching forward, we wanted to produce a new standard and load it up with desirable features for a wide-ranged sonic experience set. The new Manley Absolute Headphone Amplifier achieves this goal and more.

There are fifteen independent controls designed for maximum performance and customizable handling of sonic adjustments for a wide variety of audio experience. Of special import are the custom hand-wound air-gapped dual-mode MANLEY IRONⓇ output transformers, designed and manufactured at the Manley Labs factory in Chino, California. With a push of the button, these transformers are easily user-configured to drive three ranges of headphone loads, from 12 to 600 Ohms or greater. Additionally, the output stage can be switched on-the-fly between all-triode Push-Pull and Single-Ended topology.

The Variable Feedback switch applies from 0dB to 10dB of Global Negative Feedback around the amplifying stages while maintaining absolutely ruler-flat frequency response across the audio band, demonstrating how stable this design really is. For absolute transparency and reference tracking accuracy the Volume Control is performed by a Precision Stepped Relay ladder matrix. Furthermore, left-right Balance control is also provided to trim out uneven recordings. The Manley Absolute Headphone Amplifier operates fully symmetrically, enabling it to drive balanced headphones through its XLR outputs. Standard non-balanced ¼” TRS jacks are also provided. When the headphone amplifier is powered down, another very useful feature is included, a direct preamplifier output which routes your first line input through the system to feed an external power amplifier or powered loudspeakers. Useful, as your main audio system source can drive either playback system without having to change upstream cabling. Thus, the Manley Headphone amplifier can also be used as a stand-alone transformer-coupled preamplifier!

The Headphone Overload Protection System is also user-configurable so that exotic and precious headphones are never overdriven. We proudly incorporate our newest innovative purpose-designed-for-audio High Voltage switching power supply into our new Manley Absolute Headphone Amplifier. All super-low impedance DC rails are fully regulated and worlds quieter than any linear supply we have ever encountered. The resulting sound is fast and dynamic with deep punchy bass, dead-quiet inky blacks and superior headroom.

The Manley Absolute Headphone Amplifier also incorporates Bass and Treble Tone Control circuits. What? In an audiophile product?!! Yes! And why not? We have been building legendary equalizers for recording studios for decades. We know how to do this well! Adjust the flavor of the sound to your preference, or invoke total bypass of the EQ circuits for purist listening sessions.

Manley Neo Classic 300B Preamplifier RC.jpg (242.75 KiB) Vist 32262 gange

Our most esoteric product is THE 300B PREAMPLlFIER. This is the first and only preamp to feature these classic tubes. We had been designing the 300B into small power amps for many years and have always had great respect for the smooth natural sound of this tube. However, a single 300B provides truly appropriate power and voltage swing for headphones and makes a remarkable line driver. Here is where the impedances are not too low and the power requirements are not too high: ideal for this kind of tube in a single-ended configuration. This was the genesis of a new preamp.

We combine the historic 300B with another classic, the large octal based 6SL7GT, for the input stage- all triodes running in pure Class A operation. To complement this 'retro' feel, we implemented vacuum tube rectification and regulation in the power supply along with plenty of capacity. We also developed an additional (and innovative) ripple rejection circuit to filter out power supply noise making this an incredibly low-noise preamplifier- especially critical for headphone users.

Manley Stingray II ($7300)

Manley Stingray II.jpg
Manley Stingray II.jpg (233.05 KiB) Vist 32262 gange

The STINGRAY II is the next evolution from our acclaimed Stingray Integrated Amplifier, legendary in the hifi world since it first swam from our labs in 1997. Originally conceived with particular attention paid to optimal component placement for the purity and symmetry of the signal path layout, the Stingray quickly became one of our best-selling products. The Stingray II retains the same basic tube circuitry and marvelous output transformers as the original with some important improvements:

The high voltage tube energy storage has been increased vastly resulting in even more solid and coherent bass control and impact. A headphone jack has been added to the right side facia. This jack re-routes the output from the speaker binding posts and mutes the Subwoofer output feed. This makes the Stingray II a fabulous headphone amplifier! The 4th input source is an 1/8" (3.5mm) TRS mini jack for convenient hookup with portable devices and computers on the left front facia.

The Remote Control works with both Radio Frequency and InfraRed technologies. Using the remote in RF mode gives freedom from having to "point and shoot." The RF remote is omnidirectional and works through walls and cabinets. IR capability is included for those with Universal Learning Remote Controls for consolidated integration into existing systems. The volume control, balance adjust, input switching, and display options are all on the RF/IR Remote Control. Additionally user can perform the MUTE, DIM, INSERT and STANDBY commands with the Remote Control.

Each INPUT can be individually level trimmed to match and to optimize system gain staging of various input devices. The fancy blue LED displays surrounding the INPUT and VOLUME encoder knobs can be dimmed down or turned off entirely, after a user-settable time period, or a "screen-saver" random light sequence can be selected. Speed and intensity of the "Starlight" mode can be tweaked to taste. All custom user settings are hard written into memory when the unit is put into STANDBY mode and thus retained if power is later interrupted.

Individual sealed gold contact relays deliver the selected input into the volume control system before hitting the first 12AT7 input tubes. Following the mighty 6414 driver/phase splitter, the trusty EL84 output stage can be switched between either 20 watts of TRIODE power or 40 watts of Ultra Linear mode push-pull operation. Individual bias for each tube is easily adjusted using the trimpots and test points, conveniently located on the top surface of the amplifier. The Stingray's power supply is extra-rugged and stiff, a MANLEY hallmark. It swims with the sharks: fast, agile, fluid, and with consummate authority.

Mjölnir KGST ($3000)

Mjölnir KGST.jpg
Mjölnir KGST.jpg (220.25 KiB) Vist 36495 gange

This amplifier has been called the mini BHSE and it is a fitting name. This is a hybrid amplifier and the circuit is similar to the BHSE in many ways. The power supply is similar and so are the first two amplifying stages. The main difference is with the tubes used and how they are used. The KGST uses the tube in a more traditional nature but with the same constant current source as the BHSE. The tubes used are the 6S4A and they handle the output directly with no extra stages needed. There are no external heatsinks and the tubes are fully enclosed in the chassis.

Sound wise they are very similar but the KGST is warmer and more forgiving making it a better match to the SR-009. Like the BHSE it runs very warm so it needs a lot of air to breath. Similar to the KGSSHV this one has a servo which monitors and corrects the output so warmup is less of an issue.

After many years of not changing the KGST at all, I finally altered the chassis layout a bit so it better matches my other amps. Small updates to the boards and circuit as well but nothing major.

The Minute 45 Amplifier by SAC Thailand

The Minute 45 Amplifier.jpg
The Minute 45 Amplifier.jpg (58.42 KiB) Vist 36486 gange

Minute’s 45 amplifier comes from SAC Thailand, a small boutique audio manufacturer based in Thailand, famous for making world-class output transformers and transformer based volume controls. The Minute 45 is a custom build amp based on the Minute 300B (with the 300B tubes), so you’re not going to find it listed in SAC’s website. If you wish to, SAC can build you an amplifier that will accommodate both the 45 and the 300B tube (you only have to flick a switch to choose the tube to use), but according to them, best sound is achieved when you dedicate the design solely to one tube type, so this build is strictly a 45 tube amplifier.

SILK Headphone Amplifier by SAC Thailand

SILK Headphone Amplifier.jpg
SILK Headphone Amplifier.jpg (32.65 KiB) Vist 36486 gange

Most simple head phone circuit utilizes only 1 triode (6C45Pi super tube) to drive line output transformer with 600 ohm output impedance. This special custom made line output transformer however has only 30 ohm DCR at secondary winding. This translates to excellent driving capability without any hint of impurity of any coupling capacitor.

Minuet Single-Ended Class-A Headphone Amplifier by SAC Thailand

Minuet Single-Ended Class-A Headphone Amplifier.jpg
Minuet Single-Ended Class-A Headphone Amplifier.jpg (40.44 KiB) Vist 36486 gange

This custom made vacuum tube head phone amplifier utilizes only 1 triode (6C45Pi super tube) to drive SILK interstage line output transformer that has specific output impedance to deliver the best drive to each high-end headphone. Any output impedance to exactly match your head phone from 30 ohm to 600 ohm can be ordered specifically.

The audio circuit contains only 1 active component, that is 6C45Pi super tube, and just three more passive components, one volume control, one bias resistor, and one interstage line output transformer. we feel that this could be the most simple circuit ever implemented. The most important element to successfully implement this scheme is the quality of Interstage line output transformer. In this case we dedicate to wind SILK I-541-H from best selecting material and winding arrangement in order to achieve ultra-wide bandwidth in term of frequency response (from 10Hz to 80,000Hz at -3.0dB) while keeping the insertion loss to the minimum. The SILK interstage line output transformer performance is so great that we do not have to apply any negative feedback; therefore, this head phone amplifier will deliver unsurpass listening pleasure and purity that contains unmeasurable distortion. While prolong listening to head phone with disturbing IC circuit or transistor with heavy feedback amp or tube circuit with capacitor coupling can cause inevitable listening fatique, this effect is minimized with our design of zero feedback, zero capacitor in line amp.
