iFi Pro iCan ($1800)

iFi Pro iCan.jpg
iFi Pro iCan.jpg (1.3 MiB) Vist 18193 gange

iFi is proud to present its flagship Professional ‘Pro’ series. The first product in the range is the Pro iCAN – a studio-grade headphone amplifier AND audiophile line-stage. Inside beats ‘two hearts’ as there is are two individual Solid-State and Tube amplification sections – selectable on the go. There is nothing quite like the Pro iCAN; literally.

The Pro iCAN will for many, be used as a top-of-the-line, headphone amplifier that drives anything and everything – from CIEMs through to the most difficult to drive headphone ever made, the AKG K-1000. Further, Gain is adjustable from 0dB/9dB/18dB. The Pro iCAN can output >10V in Single-Ended mode and 20V in Balanced-mode. The 20V mode is equivalent 100W into a 4 Ohm speaker. So the Pro iCAN can drive almost any headphone into very hard-clipping (protection circuitry typically kicks in under such circumstances).

The Pro iCAN has at the core, a Japan Alps motorised rotary volume potentiometer. This is the ‘6-Track’ version with 4 tracks used for a true balanced volume control. This is the litmus test for any amplifier to see if it is truly balanced, or operates internally in single-ended mode. Those using ‘2-Track’ volume controls may offer balanced in and out, but are not true balanced designs. The Pro iCAN however is fully-balanced from beginning to end.

In terms of flexibility, 3 single-ended and 1 balanced inputs and 1 balanced and 1 single-ended output, the Pro iCAN is a full-function audiophile line-stage that is at home in many expensive hi-fi systems. Its user-selectable Solid-State/Tube amplifiers remain and so are 3D Holographic˚ for Speakers and XBass˚ for ultra-fidelity home audio systems.

Compared to high-end headphone amplifiers, the tube stage of the Pro iCAN is different in two-ways. First, we don’t use good-quality 6922s or similar. Instead we use the very best; General Electric 5670 which is the premium variant with a different pinout. Second and just as important is the circuit design. Unlike other headphone amplifiers that have the same circuit and just switch in/out the tube section, the Pro iCAN is the very first of its kind that has two individual input circuits – one tube and one Solid-State. This results in the best sonics of both worlds because the signal path is the shortest and there is no compromise to ‘shoe horn’ the tubes into an already existing solid-state circuit.

The Solid-State amplification section of the Pro iCAN is just as seriously executed as the Tube amplification section. The amplifer audio circuit is a development of iFi’s revolutionary ‘TubeState’ design. It is fully discrete, fully-balanced with either tube or J-FET input switchable, bipolar second stage and MOSFET-buffered bipolar class A Power stage (with Class AB for low impedance headphones at very high levels). The resulting circuit may be best described as ‘tri-brid’ where each device is used to greatest sonic advantage while minimising any drawbacks. Furthermore, the circuit is pure DC coupled to avoid using any sonically-degrading coupling capacitors.

The Pro iCAN employed TDK Japan-made C0G type capacitors and Vishay MELF type thin film resistors. These are complimented by Panasonic Japan-made ECPU Film Capacitors explicitly designed for audio use with extremely low distortion (<0.00001% @ 1V/10kHz). We employed ELNA Japan-made Silmic II capacitors for the power supplies. These use special silk fibre paper for the isolating barrier resulting in decreased odd-order distortion and reduced microphonics/mechanical resonances.

As one can see, the Pro iCAN despite its ‘desktop’ footprint is absolutely chocked full of premium components yet with a 4-layer pcb, has the ultimate topology in signal path layout/grounding. There is just no more ‘real estate’ left to develop. It truly is deserving of the iFi flagship mantle.

iFi Retro Stereo 50 (Stereo 50 $1600, LS3.5 speakers $810)

iFi Retro Stereo 50.jpg
iFi Retro Stereo 50.jpg (274.46 KiB) Vist 17625 gange

Starting with the Stereo 50, the iFi Retro is a completely new range that has one objective: to include everyone who loves music regardless of age, gender or technology. The Retro Stereo 50 is an all-in-one tube stereo system: from Bluetooth aptx (phone/pad) to High-res digital (computer) to vinyl (turntable). Everyone can bring their music and be able to connect to the Stereo 50 and produce music that simply astounds. There really is nothing like the Retro Stereo 50.

AMR and iFi are renowned for combining classic valve technology with state-of-the-art digital technology such as in the prestigious AMR DP-777 Digital Processor. The Stereo 50 is the latest from a long line of outstanding products. It features 4xEL84X and 2xECF82 tubes with a stunningly advanced ground-up circuit that has DNA from the best of classic amplifiers such as Telefunken, Marantz and Leak. Running primarily in Class A, its 25W+25W is and sounds astonishingly realistic. This all means a sonic performance that reflects the superb design and implementation.

Got headphones? The Stereo 50 with separate 3.5mm and 6.3mm inputs is just for you. Each headphone input has its own dedicated gain and sensitivity to perfectly match high-sensitivity In-Ear-Monitors and low-sensitivity Over-the-Ear headphones respectively. The 6.3mm output pumps out a “turbo-charged” 7,000mW. So even the most demanding of headphones such as the HiFi Man HE-6 has met its match.

iFi’s iPhono has already become a modern classic and the Stereo 50’s phono stage is set to emulate this feat. It has adjustable ultra-wide gain MM/MC from 38-62dB and its tone control system harks back to classic equalisation technology. With 6 different EQ curves (via the precision tone control), every stereophonic record is catered for. From the default RIAA through to EMI and Decca, as the legion of iPhono users can attest, once dialed-in, each and every record has “a kind of vinyl magic”.

The Stereo 50 “full system” including the Retro LS 3.5 is a match made in audio heaven. The LS3.5 is iFi’s 21st century take on the legendary BBC LS3/5a. To create the LS3.5 speaker, iFi scoured the globe for the very latest technologies and ideal materials. The result is a deep, wide and open sonic signature with spine-tingling tonality.

True High End headphone amplifier. Built as a small SET hi fi amplifier using Icon handmade multi tap output transformers. High definition with superb listening qualities to match the finest headphones.

Headphones have such an intimate relationship with the listener, a good headphone amplifier needs to have the purest possible sound to avoid long term listening fatigue for the user.

The usual way to provide a headphone output on an integrated amplifier is to drop the power through a couple of resistors, giving “low fi” disappointing results. Solid State headphone amps often use a couple of $2 microchips which can sound harsh and have limited power.

We use two Class A valves with high quality output transformers that provide ideal matching to almost any headphone type 30-600.

The power supply has generous mains transformer two custom output transformers. The HP8 MK II is a heavy 7kg, and very solidly made, giving you an idea of how much iron you get for your money!

Like our other models the HP8 MKII has no printed circuit board and is all hand wired with top quality components. We use silver PTFE audio cable, gold plated terminals and the famous “ALPS” volume pot for sonic purity.

The front valve is the excellent ECC83. this has exceptional detail and fluidity. It complements the super 6SN7 (the best hi fi valve ever?). This combination will give you a simply stunning insight into inner detail of your favourite recordings whether analogue or digital.

Like our other amplifiers, close attention has been paid to the finish of the HP8 MKII. It uses the same heavy build quality as our other amplifiers a combination of alloy plate and painted steel.

The HP8 MKII is very versatile. It may connected to your hi fi in several ways:
1, In a normal hi fi system you would connect to the “record out” of your amplifier. This will then be directly connected to the “source” that you have selected.
2, Now with built in loop enabling easy connection.
3, With “Pre and power” systems a connection may be made between the two units.
4, As a stand alone unit you can directly connect to any CD/iphone/phono pre-amp etc.

We believe that Directly Heated Triodes bring you closer to the music!

Many audiophiles have discovered that a simple well designed valve amplifier can give greater purity and intimacy than more complex solid state designs. This is especially true of headphone amplifiers and the 1920s W.E. 205D is about as simple as a valve gets! Taking inspiration from our highly rated HP8 headphone amplifier and the remarkable WE 205D valve, we have designed a deceptively simple amplifier which has surpassed even our own expectations!

The 205D is a Directly Heated Triode designed by the Western Electric Co in the 1920s and is probably the oldest valve in current production! As a small power output valve it has all the right qualities for headphone use, being very linear in operation. High end headphones can be very revealing sounding clinical and overly bright with some amplifiers. Sonic presentation with the 205D and our output transformers has the highest definition and incredible dynamics but in nice way, more vivid and warmer sounding. Completely free of fatigue.

Headphones have the ability to convey incredible detail and insight into a recording so careful circuit design is called for. Like any valve amplifier the output transformers are crucial to the final quality and our own custom designed and wound transformers play an important part in this. Also an advanced design using Directly Heated Triodes such as this demands the highest quality power supplied by outboard power supply using a time honoured valve rectifier and choke circuit.

Although headphones have only a tiny power requirement of no more than one Watt, we have taken the same care and attention to detail that is required with any “high end” design, every component is chosen carefully to avoid negatively influencing the ultimate sound quality. As in our other designs the HP205D is hard wired throughout (without using printed circuit boards) not only for better sound quality by using full size components and easier upgrades but for easy future service.

The 205D is driven by an ECC88 a modern valve which ideally complements the 205D technically and sonically.

The HP205D may be used as a stand-alone unit or as part of a hi fi system. The optional Bluetooth receiver make the HP 205D very versatile in use.

Small But Perfectly Formed! Headphone Socket. Classic Design.15+15 watts. Push-Pull Ultralinear (Triode conversion available). All Triode Driver. Simple Circuit. "Leak" front-end.

In a rapidly changing world it is nice to have some traditional values. In 1955 The British company H. J. Leak designed the Stereo 20 using the new Mullard EL84, and ECC83 valves. It was an instant worldwide success for quality performance and value. These vintage amplifiers can now fetch over £1,500!

Our new Stereo 20pp is inspired by this design. Ideal for the smaller room, or loudspeakers that do not require a large amount of power. Our circuit uses less feedback and designed to be compatible with the higher output that CD players have as well as any almost any other source including DACs and Streaming.

This amplifier has a very transparent quality, being particularly suited to acoustic and orchestral music, but used with appropriate speakers is capable of performance way beyond your expectations!
The inclusion of a dedicated headphone winding on the output transformers guarantees the best possible performance. Giving a closer intimacy than is possible that with solid state headphone amplifiers.

The diminutive EL84 output tube is very efficient much loved power tube, enabling the use of a smaller power supply and output transformers giving economy of size and materials which is reflected in the final price. The EL84 has a very high pedigree having many variants in radio, TV and radar and apparently was even used in the firing mechanism of nuclear missiles!

Cayin HA-6A ($2400)

Cayin HA-6A.jpg
Cayin HA-6A.jpg (1.74 MiB) Vist 3997 gange

Available 2020 Q1

HA-6A offers both triode and ultra-linear mode, which can be seleced without turning off the amplifier. The input tubes are 12AU7. The two rectifier tubes on the left are 22DE4. With HA-6A you can swap between EL34 and KT88 anytime you like.. In KT88 mode, you can use KT88 variants including KT100, KT90, 6550, 6550A, 6550EH vacuum tubes. In EL34 mode, you can also use EL37, 6CA7, 6L6GC, 5881, KT77 and KT66. Together with Triode and Ultra-linear dual mode selection, the HA-6A offers a lot of sound signature options in one compact chassis.

The amplifier will be pre-installed with a matched pair of Genalex Gold Lion KT88, and we'll include a matched pair of Electro-Harmonix EL34 EH in the the HA-6A package. In other word, you don't have to choose your prefer power tube, you own both options immediately and you can tube rolling as soon as you finish taking your open-box photo

The HA-6A incurred a lot of elements from HA-300, you can even consider the chassis as a one-box scale-down version of HA-300, with the separated power supply merged with the amplifier chassis and then scaled down from 445mm (159 mm + 286mm in HA-300) to the current 360mm The net weight of HA-6A is 19kg, so the shipping weight will be around 25kg.

The HA-6A has incurred the proven amplification design of our HA-300. The tube amplification part of the HA-6A is single-ended Class A, and then output from Power Tubes will feed into a pair of output transformer to provide genuine balanced driven output (both XLR4 and 4.4mm). The single-ended RCA input will feed into the Tube Amplification section directly, but the Balanced XLR input go through a pair of input transformer and converted to single-ended.

So to clear the doubt. Yes, the EL34 and KT88 are operated in Class A Single-ended, but the XLR4 and 4.4mm are truly balanced driver, they are NOT hard wired from single-ended phone out and they sound very different because of our Transformer coupled design. Will single-ended tube amplification sounds good with balanced headphones? Definitely if you implemented this correctly and Cayin HA-300 sustain this claim. The design and quality of output transformer plays a very vital part in this approach and Cayin has a very unique advantages in this aspect: we are one of the very few, if not the only, headphone amplifier manufacturer that incorporate transformer design and production in-house. We can design the transformers to meet the need of a specific amplifier, and wind the transformer in house exactly as design even when we are making high-end amplifier in small production batch.

The HA-300 adopts the Class A single-end amplification with a balanced output design. The output of the 300B power tube will feed to a pair of output transformers for single-end or balanced output. Being one of the biggest tube amplifier manufacturers in the world, Cayin designs and builds our transformers, making sure even the finest detail will be attended to. In the case of HA-300, the output transformer was specially winded to provide three set of impedance matched outputs at 8-64Ω, 65-250Ω, and 251-600Ω respectively, making it extremely versatile to match with a wide range of headphones in the market.

We also built an outboard power supply for HA-300. On top of the in-house design, custom-build toroidal power transformer, we developed a special circuit to supply steady power independently to different gain stages. The voltage amplifier circuit will adopt an independent regulator design, and we shall deploy 4 pieces of NOS RCA 22DE4 as rectifier tubes. This power supply design will deliver the cleanest power possible with minimal interference to the line signal amplification in the main Amplifier chassis.

On top of a 6.35mm singled-ended and 4-pin XLR balanced headphone output, the HA-300 has a set of speaker outputs so it can be used as a speaker amplifier delivering up to 8wpc Class A output

• Best possible integration of balanced and singled-end signal processing: Input Transformer(for Bal input)-> Push-pull Single-end Amplification-> Output Transformer (for Bal output)
• Two-boxes design with multi-stage tube regulated power supply
• Carefully selected premium tubes
Power Amplification: Full Music gold pins ceramic base 300B x2
Voltage Amplification: Shuguang WE6SN7 replica of Western Electric x2
Tube Rectification: NOS RCA 22DE4 rectifier tubes x4
• In-house design and custom-build power, input and output transformers
• Provide choice of headphone outputs for high, middle and low impedance; make sure all headphones will perform satisfactory.

Audio Space Mini-2 SE (AUD2200)

Audio Space Mini-2 SE.jpg
Audio Space Mini-2 SE.jpg (102.73 KiB) Vist 18193 gange

No, the Audio space Mini-2SE is not a single-ended amplifier, Audio Space does make single-ended amplifiers and better push-pull amplifiers but of course they also cost considerably more money. First, let’s see what you get. Opening the box you get a nicely chrome finished chassis amplifier with point to point internal wiring. Excellent build construction and a nice set of switches and knobs that feel solid. No cheap plastic buttons that adorn almost everything in this price range that make you wonder if you should have just shopped for your hi-fi at Walmart instead. The amplifier offers three switches for maximum and minimum feedback, triode and ultralinear mode, and a direct source switch to allow the integrated to be operated as a power amp. There are three line inputs, no phono stage, and a very good headphone output. There is no remote control. The amplifier certainly provides a high pride of ownership factor in terms of looks and build for this money.

The Mini-2SE is quite a neutral amplifier – solid bass and extended treble. The sound is never thick, or overly veiled or mellifluous. I tried all the various options running the amplifier in ultralinear and triode mode as well as max and minimum feedback. I ultimately found that the amplifier sounded best in triode mode with minimum feedback. For tough-to-drive loudspeakers with rock at higher levels, it is nice to have the ultralinear mode and max feedback mode which effectively doubles the amp’s power. This is a nice option for parties when critical listening isn’t required.

Few amplifiers bother with a headphone amp section and when they do it seems to be a cheap op-amp add on just to advertise that it has one. The Audio Space is a serious tube amp. I own a dedicated Antique Sound Lab MG Head DT as well as a Total Bithead headphone amp and the Audio Space mini-2SE is a significant upgrade to both units. With my HD 600, the Audio Space generated significantly better bass response in terms of depth and drive, and sounded more open and spacious than my other headphone amplifiers. The amplifier was free of noise in either stereo or headphone mode. The amplifier has a hint of softness around the leading edges of notes, which I found preferable to the ultralinear mode where it may perhaps be viewed by some as superior or more accurate but comes across as a little more “glassy.” What is nice about the switches is that they give you the ability to make the subtle adjustments to your preferences and perhaps to tailor the sound to your chosen headphones.

Outstanding Features:
• Rugged stainless steel chassis

A beautifully simple, yet sophisticated, stereo headphone amplifier design using ECL83 valves. The unit works directly from any source and includes headphone impedance matching for optimum results from your favourite headphones. With the current interest in high quality headphones driven by the portable audio revolution, this is the right product to get the best from them. Until you try a good quality headphone amplifier in place of the headphone sockets on most portables and amplifiers (where they are, in most cases, an afterthought to increase the feature count) you do not realise what you are missing.

The circuit utilises twin high specification E/I transformers output that will drive any headphone load from 16 ohms to over 300 ohms depending on how the secondaries are configured, switched by DIP switches for easy re-configuration.. The HD3S is a single-ended design, with the power pentode wired up in triode configuration for that added purity, and is as quiet as a mouse.

The HPA-5000 has a voltage gain of +28dB, and a maximum output of 5 watts. It works best with headphones having an impedance of from 30 to 50 ohms.

A design made for the true headphone audiophile, a tubed output transformer-less, output capicitator-less design from the genius of KS Park. Kang Su has a passion for excellent headphone designs, he once heard a similar design in Japan at an audio show. He thought it showed good promise but felt the tubes and circuit employed could be designed from the ground up to make for a more beautiful sound. After many years of study and a special purchase of Mullard E180CC vintage tubes, the dream was realised. This product is so special, it was categorized under the 5000 series.

What you need to know about ALLNIC AUDIO: ALLNIC is short for “All Nickel” which comes from the fact that all our output transformers are made with 78 percent nickel core perm alloy. This not only makes ALLNIC a one of a kind, listeners hear more of the lows and highs with the greatest dynamic range available. With ALLNIC you can expect greater life expectancy from vacuum tubes as we use only New Old Stock Vacuum Tubes. Since they last longer you save money. We also employ our patented gel cap dampening tube sockets which isolate micro phonics eliminating unwanted external vibrations giving listeners the purest sound possible. The ALLNIC built 41 silver stepped motorized remote controlled volume attenuator provides precise volume tracking and ease of operation making it convenient and allowing more listening time. The convenience of being able to match any power tubes with our manual power tube bias feature will save a lot of money and time in the long run. The new HA12 headphone amplifier is the result of a custom headphone amp built for a customer, and this version is now offered for anyone interested. This circuit design has several refinements for hi-end performance. This includes include a tube rectified and choke filtered high voltage power supply, with regulation for the signal amplifier. The filament supply has 18800 uF of capacitance for very low noise and ripple. The amp uses two EL84 output tubes, one 12AX7 preamp tube, and one 6CA4 rectifier tube. The output signal is transformer coupled to a pair of low-Z (32-100 ohm) and hi-Z (200-600 ohm) headphone outputs. There are two inputs, and dual mono gain/balance attenuators, followed by your choice of an ALPs RK27 volume control or a 24 step precision volume attenuator. The high voltage to the 12AX7 signal amplifier is regulated for very low noise and separation from the power amp output. The signal thru the EL84 output tube goes thru a high quality polypropylene film capacitor to the impedance matching output transformer. Frequency response is measured to be flat from 10Hz to 40KHz. Output power is meaured to be 500mw into 32 ohms and 60mw into 300 ohms, equivilent to a 2 watt amplifier into 8 ohms. Purchase options: Basic PCB board kit with parts (no chassis, no tubes, no transformers) is $249; Complete kit of all parts to build is $790; Assembled, tested, ready to use HA12 headphone amp is $999.

Vacuum Tube Audio HA-14 ($?)

Vacuum Tube Audio HA14.jpg
Vacuum Tube Audio HA14.jpg (95.7 KiB) Vist 10394 gange

This HA14 headphone amplifier was a custom design and build for a customer. Based on the schematic of an existing $800 product, we decided to do several upgrades to the basic design of the original for better sound and higher power output, using octal tubes rather than common noval tubes. These upgrades include choke filtered high voltage power supplies, with regulation for the signal amplifier. The result is more similar to products in the $1500-2000 range, with a completely dual mono design, using a pair of dual primary transformers as the only common element. Each channel has a 6X5GT tube rectifier with a CLC filter using a choke. There are two inputs, and dual mono gain/balance attenuators, followed by a very high quality TKD volume control. The high voltage to the 6SL7 signal amplifier is regulated for very low noise. The signal thru the 6L6GC output tube goes thru a high quality SoniCap to the impedance matching output transformer, with outputs for low-Z (32-100 ohm) and hi-Z (200-600 ohm) headphone outputs. Frequency response is measured to be flat from 10Hz to 40KHz. Output power is meaured to be 1000mw into 100 ohms, about 6 times as much as the original base design.

The same circuit design but using more common and less expensive 9 pin tubes (12AX7, EL84, 6CA4) is our new HA12 headphone amp. All on one compact circuit board (7.2' x 5.4") and using a single power transformer. Available as basic kit, complete kit, or plug-in ready amp.

The Monolith™ Tube Headphone amplifier brings out the best in your headphones with the rich, warm sound of vacuum tube power. Featuring a powerful 6N5P tube and dual 6N3 tubes, the Monolith Tube Headphone Amplifier will effortlessly drive the most demanding headphones. Upgrade the sound from your computer with the internal 32-bit 384kHz ESS Sabre® DAC. Connect your PC or other digital playback device and bring your listening experience to a new level with the ESS Sabre DAC combined with the warm analog sound of vacuum tubes.

Tube Sound.. The Monolith™ Headphone Tube Amplifier utilizes a powerful 6N5P dual triode tube coupled with an output transformer for the output stage. Many competing designs only utilize a large electrolytic capacitor on the output, which degrades sound quality. Dual 6N3 tubes are utilized for the input stage and can cross over to US equivalents 2C51 or 396a. The 6N5P crosses over to a US6080 or 6AS7.

ESS Technology,, The ESS ES9018 Sabre® chip uses the patented 32-bit HyperStream™ DAC architecture and Time Domain Jitter Eliminator to bring out the best in your digital recordings. The USB receiver is the Savitech SA9227. It supports all sample rates up to 384kHz/32-bit and is clocked by two onboard oscillators.

Impedance Selector.. Optimize performance for your headphones! The impedance selector allows you to perfectly match the amplifier to the headphone impedance, ensuring that the ideal power is being utilized for any pair of headphones. The impedance can be set to one of five impedance groups, from 16 to 600 ohms.

A Monotriode.. Why a monotriode? A low power single-ended tube, combined with high efficiency loudspeakers, allow the achievement of a very particular sound realism in itself, full of consistency, transparency and with a dynamic really unthinkable without listening fatigue.

The Diana 645 SE has its strength in manufacturing simplicity (few components, but good and above all used well!), has no negative feedback, even local!! Has no passive component (resistor, capacitor ...) in the signal path that can introduce colorations or distortions, except a resistor on the grid (Kiwame non-inductive).

• Max. Power: 1,5 Wrms
• Tubes: 2x 6C45P-I
• Total harmonic distortion (THD unweighted): 0,015% 20Hz-20kHz
• THD max: < 0,6%
• Input impedance: 47 kOhm
• Frequency response: 20Hz-75kHz ±2dB
• Output impedance: 16, 25, 32 Ohm
• AC: 230V
